Hi Guys,

just bought a 2012 F4R. 8k miles and full history. Clean bike.

on the ride home the indicators stopped working. I then noticed if I switched off the bike/took key out then it would work again but only the L/H side (both front and rear)would work as normal. If you tried the R/H side then it would flash both the front and rear once but then stop - and then the L/H side would also fail to work until the ignition was turned off and back on.

so the L/H side seems ok and will work as normal if you use only that side.

As for the R/H - the bad one - that says to me the switch obviously works as it flashes it on the first time you try it , there’s voltage there and the lamps themselves are ok. What else could it be? Bad connection? Faulty flasher unit? Is this year LED from factory?

any advice appreciated

James.

Welcome to the family James !!
Lovely F4 you bought. Generally a well sorted machine, but it is Italian so …
Do the 4-way emergency flashers work ok ?
I have to look at the schematic diagram.
Meanwhile, what part of the UK are you in ?

Hi there.

I think you have a short somewhere in the wiring to the righthand indicators. The flasher unit has a circut breaker in it which kills all the indicators if there is a short in any of the four circuts and resets when the ignition is turned off (the flaher unit has a pin oout for each of the four indicator circuts). See if you can narrow down the problem by unpluging the right rear indicator connector in the tail section. If the right front indicator works as it should then the right rear from that connector back is the issue. And visa versa of course.

The wiring to the rear indictors can be a problem especially where it passes through the muffler. Your bike has a tail tidy fitted so it has been altered in that area. The cables to the front indicators are routed along the front fairing bracket and they could be pinched in this area. You may need to remove the front fairing and the black panel on top of the air intake tube to see what is going on.

Are your rear indicators aftermarket? If so there may be adaptor leads and resistors added to the circut to correct the load, these could also be problem areas.

Yes, I know all this from experience!

Hi there,

Many thanks for your reply. It bugged me all the way home and I was thinking damn, what on earth have I bought here?!

I’ve had mess and found the wire from the indicator, just before it connects to plug to the controller was crushed/shorted and not connected to the plug itself. Tried it without this indicator and it’s fine - thanks for all your input!

Very much appreciated.

Maybe I can get on with the other seemingly difficult basic jobs I want to do on this bike now 😂

I’ve just had a tinker and found the R/H mirror wire crushed/shorted by the fixing bolt for the mirror itself between the mirror and the fairing mounting bracket piece.
Sounds like the Previous Owner had the fairing off and bodged the reinstall.

If working on an MV is "seemingly difficult", don't try working on any of the Jap 4s or any HD....

Do you have the Workshop manuals?

I’ve never really had any issues servicing my own bikes - Japanese or Italian, 30+ bikes. It just looks a lot more compact/hard to access basic serviceable parts than anything I’ve owned in the past. Especially the air filter.

I’ve no workshop manuals as of yet for the MV.
