Custom map settings and changes

Hey All,

So far I only have about 200 miles on my B800 and am loving it. I've been riding mostly on the "S" mapping because I feel it's easier to modulate the throttle off the line. There's a noticeable lag in "N" mode and I'm not used to that. There are things I like and dislike from each map and hopefully using the "C" map I could find the happy medium.

I was hoping we would be able to get some collective information from everyone's experience on what each setting does. Perhaps someone has already begun making changes and is more familiar with what each change/setting does.

GAS SENSITIVITY: Normal, Rain, or Sport
- Is this similar to "Engine Response"?
- Or does it have more to do with how much the throttle actually opens relative to how much throttle input you're giving it? For instance, 1/4 twist of the throttle: Rain = 10% opening, Normal = 25% opening, Sport = 50% opening?

MAX ENGINE TORQUE: Rain or Sport
- I assume this setting changes the power curve of the engine.

ENGINE BRAKE: Normal or Sport
- Does Normal or Sport setting have more engine braking?

ENGINE RESPONSE: Slow Response or Fast Response
- Is this similar to "Gas Sensitivity"?
- Or does it have more to do with how how quickly the engine responds to your throttle input. I like sport mode to take off because it's more direct. But at the same time, bumps and dips in the road give unwanted throttle movement because it's too sensitive.

RPM LIMITER: Normal or Sport
- Is this just raising/lowering the max rpms?
- If so, what is the rev limit for each setting?

I posted some thoughts about the C map a few weeks ago and had the same questions. I have played around with the settings and never saw a difference concerning the "Engine Braking" deal. I was not able to make a decision about the difference between "engine response" and "gas sensitivity". Both did change by varying the settings but now I find that Sport is the way to go. :banghead:

GAS SENSITIVITY: this is throttle response, rain mode will give you a big lag and little fuel when you blip the throttle so small movements on the throttle in the rain are almost un noticed, in sport mode its the opposite, small movements big throttle change, I find it strange that both of you with low miles on the bike are comfortable riding with the throttle in sport mode, I find it better and easier to adjust my pace mid corner with the N mode in S it is more abrupt on and off so mid corner if you come off the throttle a bit to much you are into the engine braking zone mid corner which can make it a bit exciting.

Also in sport mode from traffic light to traffic light you end up on the back wheel all the time :) which is probably why we bought these bikes but I find I can control the lift and duration better in normal mode.

MAX ENGINE TORQUE: Rain or Sport
- I assume this setting changes the power curve of the engine.
RAIN mode is apparently 80% of max power so it softens the engine so you are not wheel spinning it around in the rain.

ENGINE BRAKE: Normal or Sport
- Does Normal or Sport setting have more engine braking?
Normal has More engine breaking, sport mode has less so you can slam down on the gearbox into corners without reducing to much corner speed.

Normal will hit the limiter at 12K and in Sport will hit the limiter at 13k

Missed the one engine response, I believe this is how quickly it adjusts to throttle and traction control, I tried the two maps on a dirt road where the traction was low and it seems its how quickly it reengages power when the traction control comes back in from an intervention. in Rain mode there is a lul before it responds to throttle input.

Nice job MotoMVA. I've tried all those settings except the engine brake where I assumed (incorrectly) that N would reduce the brake effect but I like your explanation. Makes sense. Still corn-fused about the relationship between TC and engine response. So you set to fast response?

I tried your set up today and I also liked it, it's smoother getting back on the power mid corner and not so jurky when going over bumps in the road knocking the throttle. Smoother away from the lights like you said but if I want to go all hooligan then sport mode is just a thumb flick away ;-)

I find rain throttle plain dangerous. I'm however driving with the November map. The first 4k rpm it's a walk in the park but then it bites your head off. Also blipping the throttle on downshifts gives irregular results. I've set it to custom, everything in sport except engine breaking which i set to normal. (More engine breaking)

I'm not sure if i want to get the new software. I like my bikes to sodemise me not singing me a lullaby. I'm a bit scared that she's going to be to easy to drive, i like to work a bit.

But it all depends on what you're used to. I'm used to driving a torque monster which required a steady hand. Some of the cow milking throttle moves that you see on youtube would be bad. I therefore like sports mode, even on bumpy roads and sand roads.

I set the custom map up with full power and normal on everything except throttle response, which I set to Rain.

Granted, I'm only a couple hundred kms into my new ride. I found normal to be too sensitive around the city at low rpms. The Rain setting smooths that initial opening of the throttle.

I don't notice any snatch or snap or spikes in the powerband. It's smooth and the revs pick up around 8 thousand rpm.

Went out for a little play today. Set the custom map with 'engine response' in slow. It's so close to what I think it should be like like now I'll leave it there. OK when you wind the throttle you don't get that instant kick but I bet it's just as fast in the end and the rear tyre will prob last quite a bit longer. Also in town it's so close to perfect now that even I can't complain....

I think if I did play about with custom an ideal map for me would be everything in Sport except gas sensitivity which I'd go normal.

I ride everywhere in Sport but sometimes I'll try normal in town (urban) and find I'm not having to be so careful to keep it smooth

Is it possible to change the spring in the throtle "handlebar" to a stronger one? I'm used to have a heavy throtle, and this is just to light
