Did you pull in the clutch when you were downshifting?

 

Yes I did pull in the clutch. I was downshifting and rev match.

Bit of a concern reading that. How fast was you going when it happened? I read it stops working below 30mph

It was approximately 30mph downshift to 2nd gear and rev match.

Stalling on clutch in is a known issue. It's either TPS or throttle body sync related. Have your MV mechanic check that the throttle body air screws are in sync. The throttle that feeds cylinder #1 was incorrect on my bike. This is what caused my bike to stall on clutch in. As the revs dropped because the ECU reads #1 cylinder only it starved the other two cylinders of fuel.

I have just completed my first service. By the way, what exactly does it need to be complete on first service besides oil change, check and tighten loose bolts?

I am located in Pasadena area. I have purchased my Dragster 800 in San Diego. =)

 

Did you lock the rear tire at slow speed?
^Maybe dumb question, are new brutes all ABS? I know mine is not...

MY bike stalled a lot (2014 brute 800) but has not since my last map update in October.

 

Stalled a couple of times on downshifting in sport mode not in normal. Latest map needed I feel. Tell you what - you can't bump start it - rear wheel locks solid.

I had similar issues on clutch in and slowing down from 3rd to 2nd a lot. Map updates helped but I feel like i always blip the throttle now as a habit so the rpm doesn't drop too low.

 

My dragster stalled a few times when i first got it. I never did have any shaking though- i agree that it was most likely a locked rear tire. The problem is most likely an air screw adjustment. Mine was adjusted on my first service and has not stalled for at least 5k miles.

 

If no 1 cylinder is running lean would that explain why no.1 pipe seems to be more burnt-looking than the others on almost every triple I see? Lean usually = running hot.

 

Ah… nope, it’s the other way around. If the air screws are out of sync and the ECU reads #1 as lean it’ll richen up the fuel mixture making #2 & #3 richer. If it reads #1 as rich, the ECU will lean out the fuel mixture making #2 & #3 leaner.
So #1 pipe should be the correct colour. Pipes #2 & #3 will be a different colour only if they are running hotter or colder than #1. (leaner or richer) Make sense?

 

Hi all, I am new to this forum and I just picked up my Dragster 800 in November. This is my first MV Agusta and I like it so much. Last night I was exiting on freeway with 3rd gear, after the turn before comes to a stop at the red light, I was trying to downshift to 2nd. However, my bike suddenly shut down and the tail was shaking really bad. I had to pull in the clutch lever and regain balance. I almost dropped my bike but luckily I was able to safe it. Has anyone of you experienced this?

What Stephen is saying is that cylinders 2 & 3 are slaved to 1. As 1 goes, so go 2 & 3.
So adjust 2 & 3 to match 1.

 

You should always balance multicylinder engines otherwise they won't run smoothly.When balancing it is usual to have a master cylinder and match the others to that. If the ECU takes signals from sensors on No1 cylinder then you need the others to be matched to it in the first place to run smoothly as long as the ecu is adjusting all cylinders equally.

 

Ok so I'm guessing you need a sniffer to get it right yes?

 

Nope, you need a method to check air flow at each throttle body.

 

OK. Back in the carb days we used to stick a bit of tube in one ear and listen to each intake.

Aaaahh - the good old days.....

 

I've had the same problem with my Dragster. Coming off the ramp it quietly dies. Its not pilot error. ProItalia replaced the Sprag clutch on my bike, problem was solved… until about 500 miles later, it continued to shut down. They think I'm crazy, I occasionally mount an action cam over the tank to record the bars and instrumentation. Sadly, I haven't caught it on film =(

 

The Sprag has nothing to do with stalling. It is possible however, that other adjustments were made at that time. If it's throttle body related it'll happen again. Just be prepared for when it does.
