Just wondering how many of you use the clutch to change up, and if there is any repercussions for the gear box in the long term if you do not use the clutch? Just normal town riding I use it, but under hard acceleration I tend not to, is that good or bad?

Good question. Sounds like I basically use it the same as you.

Never heard anything about clutchless upshifts being bad for anything, myself.

I'm a clutcher Dingo - more reflex/habit than anything else...but haven't seen any comments on impact of non-clutching...

I'm sure Noel will have an opinion on this one. Actually, we were talking about it about 2 hours ago.

I use the clutch for up shifting and down shifting. The microseconds I may save not using it aren't going to make any difference in my lap times. If I had one of those swell quick shifters from dynojet however...

clutch?

i haven't used the clutch for shifting since the '60s with one exception, a 1946 4 cyl Indian....

its used only for launch or going into neutral

i tried not using it on the brute and it felt way to hard to shift, i've probably just got a vag though

If you want to have another go at it, change under hard acceleration in the higher revs (quickly shut the throttle off-on of course), also preload the gearlever with your toe slightly. It'll be just like butter!

I commute on a CBR1000 and i currently move the clutch maybe 5mm when shifting (if that). The clutch only needs the smallest of movements to disengage.

As for damage most guys commuting/weekending on a bike will get anywhere from 100,000km - 200,000km from the original gearbox. That consists of a fair bit of use to as in traffic you are constantly swapping cogs (or at least, i am).

Compare it to a lot of track guys that do clutchless shifting and they can get 2nd gear popping out well below 30,000km which isn't a lot in comparison. Mind you on the track a bike is under maximum stress and revs so a city environment is no where near as stressful on components.

Either way components with wear without use of the clutch but if you are someone who only does 2,000km/yr and sells the bike after a few years, chances are you won't have any problems but the bloke who buys it 10yrs later will.

Hardly ever use the clutch going up - it's actually smoother without it. I ALWAYS use clutch going down.

I NEVER use the clutch for wheelies... ;)
