Hi all, first post :wave:

New bike purchase is looming, I have been running a VFR800 VTEC (Interceptor in the US) for over 10 years. Great general reliability, though it has let me down on a couple of occasions. Touring in Europe every year since 2010 and as many ride-outs as family and work allow. I'm in my early to mid 50s so seem to fit the demographic... As per my profile I'm based in Herefordshire, UK.

Wanting to go for a Tall-Rounder, the Multistrada S was top of my wish list and I had a test ride a few weeks ago. Long story but test ride was a comedy of errors on the dealer side of things culminating in an escorted test (for their insurance purposes) with a leader that basically rode at such a sedate pace that I can't really make a buying decision. I don't mean we weren't tearing it up but didn't get above 50mph or more that 20º angle of lean... It's a sports tourer FFS. Complained about this to sales guy on return to showroom and followed up with an email which a reply offered a more spirited test ride when I felt like it. Nearest Ducati dealer is over 50 miles away so, in British terms at least, not just popping out for a while.

The Turismo Veloce has been on my radar from the start but the capacity difference has meant it was downgraded to curiosity option #1. Spoke to my local dealer (a very pleasant ride of less than 20 miles), who was conveniently manning the MV stand at the NEC Bike Show at the end of last year.

I had arranged to meet some biking friends for lunch yesterday and it suddenly dawned on me that I would be heading in that direction so I gave the dealer a call on the off chance he could offer me a demo ride. No problem was his response.

Turned up the following day to be given the keys to a Luso and, after some banter about the bike and MV in general, told to bring it back before closing time. What a difference in dealer attitude! Covered 100 miles, mostly great twisty B roads plus a bit of A road work, had lunch and returned the bike with the dash demanding the first service. I did brim the tank half way round. Good weather with a bit of rare sunshine just made the day even better.

What can I say, what a an absolutely stunning bike. Incredibly eager engine and an addictive howl (maybe a little muted but was shown an FM exhaust in the post ride chat and even demoed same on the mechanics own F3). Power somewhat more frantic/urgent than the Multistrada (from my limited experience) but not such a bad thing IMHO. Loved everything about it and think I'm sold on the idea of getting a Luso (I do like my gadgets :blush: ).

Finances to pay for it won't alas be in place until August/September. With a tour in the Picos mountains in Northern Spain booked for late June/early July I'm considering a PCP deal to bridge the gap and enable me to swap bikes earlier, paying that off later in the year. Dealer is willing to work with me on that.

Quality of finish and design seem very good. I get the impression that you're paying for quality and actually getting it. As to reliability all I have uncovered so far:

* Issues with the starter clutch on the F3 800, does the Turismo Veloce suffer from these?
* Are the nuts and bolts stainless? how well do the stand the test of time and exposure to the elements?
* The demo bike had a few of the LEDs in one of the hand-guard mounted indicators out, is this a common fault?
* Any other common reliability issues that I haven't seen yet? Multistrada seems to be a horror story on this front though I do accept that forums tend to give a false, over inflated, impression on such things.
* Not a deal breaker but is the App Apple only, or is there an Android version?

Anyway, that's where I'm at. Any pearls of wisdom on this apparently awesome bike from existing owners.

Hi Bumpkin,

Welcome along, glad you liked the TV and the dealer makes the difference between a sale and a walk away imo, no matter what the actual bikes like.

I don't own a TV so can't comment on any issues regarding that model. But I will say the bike will come with a battery tender and I recommend keeping it hooked up whenever not in use. I had a Brutale 800, one of the early ones in the UK and I never had any issues with starter sprag clutch during ownership. After reading recently about it also being a common issue with Aprillia's unless the batteries are kept in tip top condition I don't think it's a coincidence that I had no issues with mine?

As for the FM exhaust. I had one on my Brutale and while it was fun and certainly sounded awesome, especially on a closed throttle as the revs dropped to 4K, for general riding around and touring the noise becomes a tiresome drone rather quickly, hence why I chose to sell it on with my Brutale when I chopped it in for a Stradale.

Thanks for the reply Ackers.

Dealer mentioned that an Optimate comes with the bike. Use one on my VFR so makes sense. Oddly enough earlier VFR had stater sprag clutch issues, had to change one on my '94 model, so much for Honda reliability...

I get you on the noise front. The FM exhaust did sound nice but, yes, maybe too much on the loud side especially on a tour where you're on the bike all day. Would have to be a later purchase anyway, as the bike is expensive enough as it is.

:D I read many regard the stock battery as a bit garbage and swap it out asap but I never had any issues with mine, like I say, always on charge.

Hoping to get into more further rides away with the Mrs on the back now I've got a Stradale, she certainly appreciates the comfier seat! The panniers aren't going to win any awards for capacity but if you pack economically there's enough room for a weekend away. Did seriously consider a TV as I've ridden one and their ace but was tempted by the blinding deal on the Stradale :)

Welcome bumpkin.
1, I have had a sprag replaced and may need another, no big deal cause it's a known problem I'm sure Ed will have one in stock if you have problems. I never had any issues with my brutale.
2, Don't think so but they hold up well I have ridden all through winter and they are fine, maybe want to give it a coating of ACF50 or visit the allyearbiker guy in Worcester.
3, Not heard of LEDs going but I did have a rear indicator fail.
4, The clutch switch has failed with a few of us, again no big deal it just means you lose the quickshifter but it can also clear itself as soon as you get the air flowing through it again. Some (but not all) are also susceptible to have air in the coolant system.
5, I'll let a Lusso dude with an android phone answer this. I have the Ed1 TV so no data logger or active suspension.

Remember this is MVs first shot at a tourer and it is a great bike, far better than some manufacturers who have been making tourers for generations imho, will there be a few niggles, probably, will you forgive the niggles when you ride it, definitely.
I can't honestly think of a better do it all bike and it does it all so effortlessly.

Thank you. Obviously sussed my local dealer ;)

Do you have any experience of dealing with him? seems like a nice guy with a passion for MV. However, is likely to be becoming a Kawasaki franchise as well shortly. Can't be bad I suppose if it improves his business, so long as he keeps on with MV.

Good to hear, have heard that the Multistrada DVT doesn't do well in this respect with easy corrosion, possibly due to Audi 'bean counters' getting involved. For such a prestige bike, at a prestige price, they're cutting off their nose to spite their face. Everything I've heard and read about Giovanni Castiglioni encourages me to buy one, he seems obsessed with making quality machines irrespective of cost. Something that AMG and he are banging heads over at the moment. Allegedly a pivotal meeting in Stuttgart this coming Monday, keep your ear to the ground.

Something like a switch isn't going to bother me. The failure of a sprag clutch somewhere in the Alps and 700 odd miles from home would though. Did yours come on progressively or just fail? If the former how long from symptoms until it wouldn't catch at all? I believe that bump starting isn't possible, or very hard, due to slipper clutch.

I had a 1st gen Multistrada, spent 8 years with an R1200GS, and test rode the current Multistrada before buying the TV (and a year before, picked up a Tiger 800 XRx). I ride mostly 2-up, and find that I don't miss having a 1200 twin at all, especially with the TV.

Have a little over 2K miles on the TV, so far no serious issues. I don't use the battery tender, but I ride it about 3-4x a week so I'm assuming (hoping) that shouldn't be an issue. My dealer was unable to clear the service nag message after my 600 mile service (computer wouldn't behave), but I just clear it manually after I start. The radiator overflow really doesn't like to have very much fluid at all - if you fill above the min line it will puke it out :D

The TV is the first MV I could actually ride with any comfort as I have cranky knees. It is a very fun bike - think sport bike with heated grips and cruise control :naughty: . And it has tons of character. I giggle every time I ride it.

I ride mostly 2-up, and find that I don't miss having a 1200 twin at all, especially with the TV.
Good to hear, thanks. I ride two-up very infrequently but sometimes tour with laden panniers and a tank bag. This 'drags' somewhat with the VFR/Interceptor.

I giggle every time I ride it.
This is what got me. A friend I ride with quite regularly accompanied me on the test ride, his exact words describing the look on my face at the first stop was that of a kid who had been given a big jar of Smarties for breakfast.

On reflection it reminds of the Yamaha TDR250. I used to work in the trade and we had a demo that I used to take out to run errands. The TV is a grown up version of that with lots of added power, style and sophistication.

1. I haven't had any issues with my TVL starting even when it hasn't been on the charger for a while (and the cold). Generally I keep it on the charger, though.
2. Haven't seen this on mine, nor any complaints.
3. There have been some reports of issues but, so far, I haven't had any.
4. I'm not sure about a different version of the app.

I have a bit over 5000 miles on my TVL and had switched off a 2015 MTS S Touring which was rife with issues after about 5200 miles on that bike. The TVL is not perfect by any means but trades off the issues it has against being a super, super fun bike and more practical than you'd expect.

Biggest issue I've seen stopping people getting one is the size of the cockpit. If you're a taller person, it can be somewhat cramped.

I have read quite a few of your posts on here with interest. Thank you for documenting your early and ongoing ownership experience, it's been a great help (if it all goes wrong it'll be your fault OK :D :rolleyes: )

I'm 6', didn't have an issue on the 100 mile test ride though the bike did feel quite compact. Not in itself a bad thing though.

I'm 6'1" and don't exactly feel cramped except a hair in the knees. The main issue for taller riders is the cutouts on the front fairing. Depending on how my foot is on the peg, my knee either fits with room to spare or hits the top of the cutout. Mostly when shifting. I was going to have the seat modified to be an inch higher (did that with the Tiger) bit I'm rethinking that as I like the weight balance. I just adapted my shifting technique and kick my knee out a bit.

The risers are actually on the taller side of things, so doubtful anyone would want more rise. Could actually drop a hair if anything but I'm kinda in, "quit chasing perfect, just ride the crap out.of it."

Am actully out right now, stopped for coffee. Nasty high winds -/probably gusting around 50mph. I don't really like riding in the wind but I have the day off. Can't control the weather..

Must say that I didn't notice that on the test ride, leathers with knee armour might be the reason I didn't though.

I always wear gear so, I haven't noticed any discomfort from the cutouts, I'm 5'9" ish though, so...

Glad you found my posts useful, maybe MV will give me a kickback... LOL

Seriously though, while I struggled to enjoy the 2015 MTS, the TVL is epic. Super, super fun bike and *exactly* what a sport tourer should be (sans the stilts but, you can't have everything, right?).

Still willing to give the Multistrada a final test ride before committing to the TVL. The financial problems at the factory will be causing supply problems until September at the very least. My local dealer only has one left so I'm in a bit of a quandary over what to do. Added to which finances won't be in place until September anyway but committing to the bike on a PCP deal means I can get it to first service and take on our trip to Spain.

There are plenty of peeps who had no serious issues with their 2015/2016 MTS but I certainly wasn't one of them. You can go over to ducati.net and read my experiences with the 2015 I had there if you're interested (and haven't already). Coming off the back of my 2012 MTS S, the 2015 was a disappointment at best in most regards. Each to their own, of course, will be interested to see what your thoughts are on the MTS.

I'm in either leathers or textile, both with armor so it isn't any discomfort, but rather the knee just doesn't fit in the slot when I go to shift. It also depends on where the shift lever is set, boot thickness, and your technique (ankle flexibility, etc). Again, not the end of the world as I happily ride hours at a time. I did need to adjust to it though, and since I have another bike with similar ergos, my mind/body does a lot of A/B comparison.

Yeah Ed got me my Edition1 all be it in the wrong colour but there you go, I now class myself as the Lone Ranger with my trusty steed Silver. He seems to want to do right by his customers and I have found dealing with him a pleasure. Last time I spoke to him he was telling me about expanding with Kawasaki.
It is a progressive thing with the sprag, it takes longer and longer to start, I mentioned to Ed I had heard a few metallic type noises on start up and he told me to get it in for a replacement. It never left me stranded anywhere just occasionally took more than one press of the button to start, if memory is working the longest it took was about 4 attempts. My local dealer has 3 sitting in his window both std and Lusso so there are still out there and Ed could get one from him I'm sure if needed.

So trickle charging delays the sprag issue? Sounds like it is a combination of both sprag and original battery not being up to snuff.

I wonder if they are Lucas? :eek:

Good to know Red, it means a lot to hear from someone who's had direct experience with a dealer. Thanks also for the description of the progression of your sprag clutch failure, sounds like how the one on my '94 VFR went. Interestingly enough that was after the RegRec died and knackered the battery which I struggled on with for a while before replacing. Optimate a good idea then and possibly a Motobatt swap out after the first year or two to keep those cranking amps up.

Thank you all for your responses, keep em coming. It's encouraging to find such a friendly and active forum of TV riders, makes the decision to buy one even more attractive knowing that there's an existing knowledge base out there :yo:

A lot of people would say, justified or not, that the battery is best replaced after the first DAY or two hahaha, I swapped mine for a yuasa ytx14bs if I remember correctly not because it was bad but due to my TV turning over slowly on start up, the yuasa didn't help!
