hi guys. i got the bike back after engine rebuilt. but, the tachometer is messed up!

when the bike is off, the needle rests at the top end. when the ignition is turned on, it may come to zero (not always). when the engine is turned on or when riding, it is not showing actual RPM. i was told that if a magnetic object is placed near the tach it would mess up. the bike was tore apart during the rebuild; and, the dealer claims no magnetic stuff was placed near the instrument cluster.

is there a way to fix it?

No tips I am afraid, but my Brutale tachometer is messed up too after a front end re-build by the dealer- no blame intended. e.g. 5k rpm on tickover. I am lucky as they are still under warranty and MV are going to replace the whole set of clocks. They arrived yesterday and will be fitted shortly. No magnets involved that I am aware of.

Bloody hell. Never heard of this one.
Start by checking the pins at the back of the tachometer. Look for pins out of alignment. If it all looks good I'd install it onto another MV and check it's operation.
If it works properly then I guess it's time to inspect the various input sensors that deliver information the the tachometer.

What color is the wire leading to the tach? On my '07 it was Black/Grey. Signal is coming from the ECU via that wire. If that helps any.

unfortunately, mine is '07; well out of warranty. since it got messed up while at dealership, i am going to try to have them take care of it.

i don't know the color of the wires. mine is '07 as well. i plan to take it back next week. i will ask them to check.

Does the needle rest properly as it should when the multi plug is removed?

i am not sure what 'multi plug' is, adrian. and, i don't work on the bike.

when the bike is off, the needle rests completely at the top end, sometimes. it could come to zero when the ignition is turned on. when the bike is running or riding, the reading is not correct. it just hovers around 1-2k. haven't ridden meaningfully since i got the bike back to get better observation. but, the tech claims he fixed the tach (after seeing the issue) and it worked fine during the test rides.
