Starting question

Why does starting with the clutch lever pulled in only enough to let the starter engage make starting easier on the sprag ? Just out of interest, thanks

The additional drag of the transmission helps smooth the pulses of compression on the crank which helps the sprag stay engaged.

That's my theory, anyway.

I agree with Ed. The sprag needs to have some load on it in order to remain engaged throughout the start sequence of the bike.

If the engine "free-wheels" or moves enough to take load off the sprage, the sprag disengages and re-engages rapidly under load and that is the damage mechanism.

Eventually, it wears out.
