If you read this service bulletin,it does inform dealers they can claim warranty (GE) even when the bikes warranty has expired.

My dealer has just diagnosed me that my sprag clutch has gone on my Dragster RR.

The bike was registered on the 14th of April, 2016 and the sprag failed on the 22nd of April 2018, 1 week outside the 2 year warranty!

My dealer tells me MV will supply the sprag, but I have to pay the labour, which is £225 plus VAT! (3 hours labour) I don't blame the dealer, it sounds like a fair charge for the labour, but I don't feel that I should be paying it.

So don't believe that its covered in the UK even after the warranty.
I asked the dealer to supply me the sprag and I would fit it, I was told it would then cost me £95 plus VAT for the sprag!

Thanks
Phil

I probably shouldn't name the dealer, but I live in Norwich, UK, I'm too far from the Yorkshire dealer, or I would be going there with it.

I'm disappointed that this is a known issue and I'm just outside of the warranty period (days in fact) , yet they won't cover the costs. I did question the dealer and he didn't really want to know.

Does anyone know if its possible to appeal this with MV themselves? If so, how?

thanks
Phil

In the uk each dealer is independent, so a different dealer might have a different attitude. Have you asked if they’d fit it as part of a service and how much extra then? Might be worth contacting other dealers to see what they offer.
Rubbish service for sure though.

In the US the dealer who is doing warranty work must return the removed parts to the Mothership. Perhaps that is true world wide. That is probably why the dealership will charge you for the SPRAG if you do the work yourself. FWIW, the labor rate in the US is around $200.00/hour. Labor and parts are covered under warranty.

Hi,
Funnily enough it was booked in for a service when it went wrong, this was going to cost an extra £135 plus VAT (oil / filter) so I am doing that myself and getting the sprag fitted by the dealer.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with MV directly? I checked my registration documents and it was registered on the 20th of April, and it failed on the 21st of April, so it was actually 1 day over the warranty,

Phil

There is a link on the MV Agusta web site for customer contact.

I should think the dealer would plead your case for warranty if it was the day after expiration..... The actual failure began before that date.

Hi, I have a 2014 Rivale and it would not start yesterday. It turned over but made a really loud banging noise like metal on metal. I have only had the bike 2 months (bought from an independent dealer not an MV dealer). I have read about 8 threads on the sprag issues with various workarounds, press starter then pull clutch in etc but it will still not start and the battery was flat after about 10 mins of trying. The battery was replaced before I took delivery and is always on a tender so not sure it is that. It has never fired up on the first press and always took about 5 seconds to start, thought this was just the normal for an MV (I am not a mechanic, have no experience of maintaining bikes, more of a “send it to the dealer” person) sometimes requiring a few presses each time. My questions are, does this sound like the sprag, the bike came with a warranty (independent one), should I contact a MV dealer or the warranty company. The main question though is if this is the sprag, will this be covered as its well out of the MV warranty.

It does sound like the sprag. If you have a 3rd party warranty then it should cover the starter mechanism and the fitting of it. If it doesn't cover that then you should be able to get the new part FoC and just pay labour to get it fitted - but even if you can't the part itself is only about £80.
Note though - you need the latest ECU map to go with the physical part to resolve the issue - which MV dealers should install as part of any service work.

Thanks for the reply. Can I get my local dealer to fit it then ride over to a main dealer for the ECU map, the nearest main dealer is 70 miles away and the bike won’t start and I have no way of transporting it without paying another £150 :frown2:

For info - the fix is in 2 parts. The sprag part itself is upgraded with finer tolerances and greater strength where required. They also identified what was damaging the previous sprags - it was todo with how the engine powered off and sometimes it put a load on the sprag causing undue wear. This part, along with a different firing up procedure (sparks after fewer turns than previously) have been changed in the latest ECU update. The ECU update takes around 5 mins to do. Whether your local dealer will charge you for it I can't say.

Does anyone know if the F3 2012 EAS 1.0 can be updated with this ECU updates or is it just the later EAS 2.0?

Cheers,
Kev.
