Well my sprag has gone after just 1600kms from new. Version 3 being fitted to bike at this time. My question is what happens if it goes again out of warranty? Will MV continue to change for free as there is a problem with sprag or is down to owner to foot costs?

I'm pretty shure it's covered after the warranty is up, don't remember where I read that though..I had mine done a while back, if it becomes a regular problem I might sale it. I think the 2017 models have a updated sprag, might look at buying a new one too...

Australian consumer law is your / our friend in this case. Well documented history of this problem as well as dealer notices etc to prove it's a known defect.

Hi there,

When an item like the sprag fails warranty restarts on that particular item. For example your sprag could still be in warranty when the bike comes out of warranty. Also, if the dealer is notified while the bike is in warranty about the fault, expiry of the warranty does not exonerate the dealer from fixing the fault.

One of the things holding me back from pulling the trigger on one of these things is the sprag clutch.

It should not stop you mate. It's really not that bad. Once diagnosed the dealership had the warrenty approved within the week and parts a further week later. 4 hours work.

My sprag started 'complaining' around the 9000km mark - replaced now with the 12k service done. There are a few work arounds (push starter button, pull clutch in till switch makes and starts turning).

Nothing, i mean NOTHING comes close to a MV.

Okay my 10/2012 F3 675 with 9000km has started showing symptoms of the dreaded sprag clutch issues

It begun by cranking an not firing first time but almost always started 2nd button press then Saturday after stopping for Breakfast at Audley in The Royal National Park which any Sydney sider would know has zero cell phone coverage she would not start :frown2: enter hot flushes, cold sweats and panic!!

She cranks over really fast but doesn't fire almost like there was not spark, eventually after about 5 minutes of trying each time getting more and more anxious she fired into life

Can some confirm this is the symptoms of a sprag clutch failing and where I stand as far as having it replaced? am I going to have to shell out $$$ for a known fault because the bike is 4 year 7 months old?

Any advise would be great

It's not sprag failure if the machine is turning over.
Not correct

The sprag clutch slips and not turn the bike over quick enough for ignition to start.

Once connected to the diagnostics laptop i could see the max revs the bike got up to was a whisker over 900 - it needs 1000 rpm for the ignition to get signal from ecu to start firing.

Theoretically yes, as long as you can get the engine to spin to higher than 1000rpm the ignition will start firing.

Try the workaround - press the starter button in, pull the clutch lever in untill the microswitch just engages and engine starts spinning (keep clutch in that position as if you are riding the clutch on pull away) - engine should start up easier. Not fully disengaging the clutch from the drive train helps to place sideways pressure on the drivetrain / sprag clutch making it 'grip' more. (my theory here - could be some other engineering reason for this but this does work)

Before my warranty replacement i lived like this for quite a few months with no starting problems using the workaround.

Thanks Mate!!

I've spoken to my local dealer and have been advise that MV will honour 1x sprag clutch replacement out of warranty if the bike hasn't previously had it replaced, they also advised it is the most incorrectly diagnosed fault and suggest checking the battery first so I've order a Shorai LFX Battery and will fit that and see how it goes.

Your above workarounds give me confidence that I will be able to get the bike started if it is the sprag clutch, my worst fair is getting stuck miles away from home with a bike that wont start :crying:

Thanks again for the advice

Mine happened when the battery was 6 months old. I changed up to a Lithium with a much higher cranking capacity but problem still persisted. They all tell you to make sure your battery is in top shape - this also the reason why they provide the trickle charger as standard with the bike

I've had my F3 for 18 months and whenever it in the garage it's on the trickle charger, however I don't know what battery is in the bike nor do I know how the previous owner maintained the battery, hopefully it is just the battery and I'll be good to go :grin2:

If it's got "BS" written on it in big white letters then it's the OE battery

I've done 4200 miles on my Rivale and still on original sprag but I think it's just beginning to slip. Took the bike for a spin last night and had starting issues, engine turning over but wouldn't fire up. Used the trick with the clutch lever and started straight away. I've got just one month left on warranty so will be calling Moto Corsa in the morning to get it sorted pronto.

It wont do any harm to get into the habit of always pulling the clutch in after the starter button is pressed.
Ive started mine this way since having new sprag fitted.
It becomes natural after a while.
