right lets see, just how many peeps rear wheel bearings have gone? mines a 05 1000s has done 5300 miles and was registered in 06 , so its been on road for less than 2 summers!!! i know for sure johns has just gone has well, what im trying to ascertain is this. have mv at the factory fitted cheap and inferior wheel bearings in a batch of their bikes? does anyone with later models have the same problem? ive been told i was very lucky not to have a big accident has i was riding the bike when they went!!!! if your bearings have gone what have you replaced them with and are they standing up to the job? i wouldnt like top think i was going to have this done every 5000 miles!!! and also be scared of riding the damn thing!!
Mines '55 reg Ian, so not much older than yours, I would guess I've covered about 5000 miles on mine too. I think MikeF4UK's advice is well worth paying attention to, if the bearing is very hot after a run its probably on the way out. I plan to change the bearings in mine at the end of every season from now on.
For riders in the UK the bearings can be obtained from:
Tel : 01902 395959
Fax : 01902 395939
Rear hub replacement bearing ref:
3810RS bearing 1 off
HK5520 bearing 1 off
MBR55X63X5A seal 2 off
This information was provided to me by Mike (our resident R1 owner :wtf BTW.
wow that is something that worries me now that I am upon miles on my 06 F4. I really would like to order a set maybe one of the sponsors (not emoto) will read this and put together a package deal on the set front and rear and make it barney style to order a set. that would be great does anyone know a website or a vendor in the US that can get us these bearings and seals?
yes john, but they shouldnt bloody go at 5000ish miles!!!! were talking a bout a top of the range marque bike here, i cant see japanese bikes doing this!! what about the single sided dukes do they have problems? ive had quite a few bikes and never had wheel bearings go , never mind collapse, if i had not heeded the warning sign( anotchy click) and pulled over to investigate then i might not be even typing this, imo its just not bloody good enough
I'd been giving my bike a real pasting, serious stuff and then I stopped at my brothers and when I set off again the back wheel was all over the place. I stopped to find aluminium shards all over the rear rim. Rightly or wrongly I rode home (about 12 miles) at no more than 40 mph. when I stripped the rear end the hub was totally shot.
then you were very lucky mate indeed , my wife was following me on r6 and said the back wheel was all over the shop, id only stopped to l;ook at it 500 yards earlier and yes there was shards of ally everywhere, so i sent her back home to get car n trailer, it started when i felt what was like when you hit a small stone and bike jinks sideways but i knew i hadnt hit one so rode on about a mile and it did it again so i stopped in a filling station put bike on stand and wiggled back wheel and it seemed fine i inspected chain and couldnt see anything wrong so set off again , got about 500 yds and it did it again but worse so i stopped and noticed the slivers of oil that wernt there earlier said to dawn (wife) were going home i dont like this which is when she followed me and saw wheel wobbling !!!!!! i very obviously felt this and pulled over immediatley, my speed never got above 25mph , had i been going quick i might not have noticed the jinking feeling . the bearings had gone all at once , a sickening thought
