Hello guys,

It's been 7 months I own my F4. It's a 1000S from 2005. I did lots of update (radiator bracket/ mitch's hub/ manfred fan etc...)
I also purchased and installed adam's chip (decat+RG3 exhaust map).
From the first ride, I smelt unburnt gas and the fuel consumption was high at end summer temp : around 20-25°C (68-77°F).
Fuel light popped up around 190km (118 miles) and several weeks after this ride, I did 207km and it remained 2L of fuel (0.52 US Gallon). Temp was around 10-13°C (55-55°F).
To compare, with my 998 and 4L less in fuel tank, I can do 300-310km (186 miles) fuel tank fully empty

I decided to contact Adam to help me sorting out this consumption problem... Spent months of troubleshooting me and I appreciate a lot ! And I adjusted the trimpot in the ECU couple of times.

The previous week I did 180-186km (111-115 miles) before the light popped up on the dashboard. The weather temp was around 3-5°C (37-41°F)... I decided to go to the gas station and arrived there with 2L left in the tank and I did 206km (i.e 9L/100km or 26 US MPG) ! That's a lot espacially when I don't exceed 6k rpm. The average rev I cruise is 5000-5500 rpm...

I scheduled an maintenance to do some dyno run with AFR to adjust the ECU trimpot. To set it perfectly.

However, I would like to know what is your fuel consumption with your F4 ? I would like a reference point... If possible with Adam's chip.

And last question, what could be the fuel consuption fluctuation in percent between winter and summer temp ?

Thank you in advance.

Fuel consumption should not really change very much with weather.
When I am being sensible, cruising at 5~6k rpms, I average 32~35 miles per US gallon (sorry, I'm in the USA...you can convert to km and liters).
If I am being naughty that consumption will drop into the 20's. On the race track it is even less.
The MV is a thirsty engine.

..additionally to Ed´s comments, I would say,
9L per 100km sound to me a bit more than "normal",
but it will not have a negative impact (except on your wallet 💰 )
Better drive "rich" than "lean".
On my racebikes, the consumption is 14 l/100km = 16,8 miles per US gallon,
on my road 1000 S, standard setup, it is around 8L/100km =29,4 miles per US gallon

@Manfred @esq'z me
Thanks from your replys.

According to what @esq'z me said, it's 3 liters away from his fuel consumption at 5k rpm

No problems for convertions, I'm used to now.
You guys never ride in winter ? I heard the fuel consumption could change according the weather temp...

We agree on that but Adam enriched the mixture at high RPM. So it I can set the mixture perfecty at idle and low/medium RPM, that would be perfect.

I could run out of fuel pretty quickly on a roadtrip... Which isn't good 😬. I wouldn't push the bike till I find a gaz station (espacilly in mountain passes 🥵)

There are fuel bags and canisters in various sizes to carry extra fuel. I might do the same since running out of fuel is no joke. The ‘tent’ addition was a joke, I think? Being stuck on a mountain remote from people can spell trouble as the temp drops. —revzilla has examples of the bags. Let me check… ah here ya go;

Giant Loop Armadillo Bags
Nelson Rigg Trails End canister
Desert Fox Trail Gas Bag
Primus Fuel Bottle

On a long Trans continent trip long ago I often used a fuel bottle. Yukon Territory riding. Thing is, make sure you carry extra Viton o-rings no matter which system employed. Carry a rag or two.The fuel bag appeals to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but,
easiest is to set the trip to zero when refuelling,
and start looking for a fuel station after 160...180 km.
That also helps if suddenly the reserve fuel level sensor stopped working.

With my F4 1000 I never reached 200 km before the fuel light comes up.

i agree with you, they are thirsty, thirsty

2015 1090rr not much riding(500miles) but 90 to 115 mpg i got maximum

Woah ! So I'm 'ot the only one concerned about the high fuel consumption 😅
Thanks for the feedbacks

My 2007 F4R 1000 averaged 35-37 mpg on the 1500 mile trip home from Las Vegas to Bellingham, WA. Still averages about that when I ride here in the mountains. Pretty easy riding though. I have a pair of 1.5 liter camping fuel metal containers that have served me well when taking long rides. The caps seal very well and I've never had a leak. That extra 3 liters of gas is comforting when you're in unknown territory.

@Moonbeam Dont forget you have changed the sprocket size also - this will efect your cruising rpm and therefore your fuel consumption.
And as mentioned, cold air will definately effect fuel consumption..
Another thought, you changed your air filter at the same time, I wander if it could have been over oiled ?

My map is set 12.8 to 13.0afr at the very top rpm, an area that you dont go into,13.2 in the rest of the range.
The original RG3 eprom was 10.8 at the top and around 14 low to midrange

How do you manage to get 50mpg on the 998 ??

No, I didn't change the sprockets. It's still the first drive chain and the factory sprocket configuration. The previous owner bought it in 2006. I visually checked the sprocket settings (15 at pinion and 40 at crown). I've got a MY 2005 setting.

No, the seller adviced my to spray 2 passes the intake side oil K&Noil and clean kit.
I only did 1 pass.

Euh... On the throttle side, during a roadtrip I didn't exceed 6000-7000 rpm. My average rev speed was 4500rpm.
I have a 996R ECU (equipped by a previous ower) on it with LeoVince exhaust muffers (with dB killers).
The average temp was around 35-38°C (95-102°C).
And I was mainly in mountain passes.
However I never did a dyno run with AFR. I'll do one by curiosity.

My bad, thought when you spoke about the sprockets you had swapped them out..

No problem. And thank you for the AFR data. I'll try and find the best adjustment according to those values when the F4 will be on dyno run.

The air filter would have been pre oiled and would not have needed another coat on top ?
