3 seconds is about average for F1 and 4 seconds is a lifetime. The really good teams can float around 2.5 or just over that.

The difference between F1 and Indy is that Indy does fuel and tires and can only have 6 people over the wall, where as F1 only does tires and can have as many as 17-20 folks working a pit stop.

More races are won on pit stops as apposed to drivers overtaking each other on the track these days. Although I must say things have improved, I watched a race the other day that had about 5 overtaking incidents. It must be frightening for those poor drivers.
