4mm shank, about 25mm long with a 3mm allen key for anyone wondering. Also, the cover truly is a pain in the ass to remove. had to loosen up the coolant reservoir, zip tied just about everything out of the way and still took a lot of jimmying. Big issue is the crusty old wiring loom along the right hand side. makes me wonder how easy it will be to pop it back in...with gaskt still in place. Currently contacting people for a new gasket as the half moons were rtv'd and are being very difficult to remove.

I have learned over time that the easiest way to remove and install the valve cover requires removing the radiator. Gives access to the front of the valve cover to confirm gasket is seated properly....a bit of work but makes the job sooo much easier that it is worth it.
Yes there are seals in the cover for the spark plug wells and second air passages, but these rarely need replacement. Also seals on the cover bolts which may be worth a look, but also do not need replacement very often..

In due time. Boozen n cleaning parts currently. Spose I'd have to drain the system, get new screw clamps etc... to do that. Need to look into the process. Likely a good idea tho. It's a tough squeeze without buggering the gasket

You do have to drain the system, but if the coolant is more than a couple of years old then it is time to refresh anyway. Clamps are reusable if they are the originals. Buy a Clic-R tool (readily available at not much cost).
Old gaskets have lost resiliency (hardened with age), so be sure to seal both sides all the way around with RTV if reusing.

I'm goin to do a dry run and see if I can do it without removing. It would be nice to get a hand in there. Thought removing the left rad mount on top would give enough slack. Nope. Right side mount is a peg, no slack. Either way, full RTV coating both sides happening tonight. maybe even a shmear on the outside for good measure. plus some flex seal???

Far be it from me to conflict or contradict the Oracle that is Ed Eskew but I will always remove the throttle bodies and remove the tappet cover to the rear of the bike.

I think Ed was referring to visual inspection access rather than removal from the front. Its in the wee hours here, Ed is most likely getting his beauty rest.
