I Need some advice from Uk owners for a problem with the head light passing MOT on my F4 750. I was told that a new head light bulb was needed as the light was pointing in the wrong direction, however once the dealer put the bulb in the dealer said this did not cure the problem and it would need a headlight lens to cure the problem. Can anybody tell me if this is correct or how i can get it to pass the MOT.

I have already waited for 4 months for the bulb and im sure it will be another 4 months to get the lens if it needs it.

any advice would be welcome.

When I lived on the UK mainland it used to be that if lights were fitted they had to work! If that principle still holds you dont need to even have a headlight fitted for an MOT, so as Roy says take the light out and make a cover to go over the hole.

Hi

1) Have you owned the bike from new ??

2) Did the original supplying dealer obtain the bike from 3X the importers.

3) Has the bike undergone any previous front end repairs, and if so was genuine UK parts fitted

Sound that it might have been a Euro imported model.. Check the part number on the headlamp is correct for the UK model.. 800090912

This might be of help

Good Luck, and let us know how you get on ??

why might it take 4 months for a bulb to arrive? are they not a standard bulb type? I take it that the lens pattern is dipped to the right and not the left as it should be for the uk?

I am guessing you mean the dip, I bought a bulb recently from my local car parts shop they had it on the shelf (its not unique to MV). It's not the bulb which makes it dip to the left but the lens, as JDS says it sound like you have a lens from a import bike or the wrong lens has been installed at some time. I believe there is an arrow on the lens pointing in the direction of the dip. have a close look. You can also mask the lens so the beam becomes flat with no apparent dip pattern (like you would for riding/driving on the continent). I think that should be good enough to pass the MOT. Your MOT tester will be able to confirm that, I'm surprised he didn't suggest it to you.

I had the same problem with my first MV 'a so called official UK bike'. In the end I had to change a small metal shield that sits behind the reflector. It was not that easy to do plus I had trouble getting the part.

I had the same problem with my first F4 750 and my first F4 1000 both were purchased from DK motors, the light problem can easily be rectified by changeing a small metal shield that sits behind the reflector in the head light, I think it requires a weld. DK said it is a very easy job to do but it is also very easy to crack the head light glass, so I got them to do it. :jsm:

If you ring DK motors and ask for Andy Blakeley, in the service dept, telephone 01782 861100. They gave me two options, option one was bring the bike in and we'll do it while you waite or option two send your head light to us by post in a box and we'll send it back modified, don't hold me to it but I think the going price is about £30. :mouthwate

I don't know who told you, you had to change the bulb, but who ever it was, was talking bolxxks. :)

To answer a few questions, ive owned the MV from June, its the bikes first MOT and i was told it was a UK bike, the bike has never been crashed and is in mint condition. I dont know were the part number is but The arrow on the lens points to the left, Does that mean its a UK lens? does anybody have a picture of the metal part in place in the headlight?

I think the code number for the part might be 800094522 but if you give the technical department at Three x a ring they should be able to help

My F4 was originally a european spec bike but the previous owner had the headlight converted to UK spec by 3X when he imported it. You should be able to put some tape on the lens to deflect the beam. Also there are adjusters on the back of the headlamp that moves it up/down & left/right so it could possibly just need adjusting. Sound like you need a friendly MOT tester. Come & use the one I do, don't think he even checks if the headlamp works let a lone if the beam is pointing in the right direction!
