i can turn them on ok, they just dont seem to be heating. i assume level 3 is the warmest. i assume since i dont have a frikin manual!

When I got those mounted on a base model, my dealer alerted me that to save the battery, the heat grips are not heating unless you reach a threeshold on the rpm. And as matter of fact it seems to be about 3000rpm. By fact I can tell you it's not practical. Last week end was under very rainy and fog condition in Ardèche at 1400m on the altimeter. It was cold (near zero), snow around the road, foggy (visibility about 20 meters), and the threeshold seems too high in this conditions : you ride low on the rpm, and sometimes you need to bump a gear down in order to have the heat grips active... Not practical. May need to find another way to feed those, or simply replace it by something more convenient (was using coolride resistors inside the handlebar of my previous bike, and it was so efficient that I'm asking myself the question to come back on those - but it would require to significantly change the esthetics of the handguards)...

well thats interesting because i was testing them while idling. some time earlier i could have sworn they were working while i was riding

I confirm it doesn't work while idling, and that is perfectly normal as per the indication of no power feed in the heat grips until a certain level is reached on the rpm...

with the last ECU update MV changed to way how the heated grips kicked in... the rpm is now a bit lower... I guess 2500....

Yes, and it is still a bit high... When you have a road with fog (visibility 20 meters), gravel, snow on the side, rain and temperature at 1° Celsius, it maybe very often you are very low on the rpm... And there is basically no reasons for this with a 450W alternator and led lightning. In fine, you have to rely on heating equipment when temperature goes below a certain threshold, and then the heating grips are useless (Sometimes asking myself if someone rode this bike at the factory in other than sunny day conditions)... My monster was equipped with coolride.de heating resistors mounted in the handlebar. Was able to ride by negative temperature in summer gloves without any issues. It's not the case here, and it's a pity. Will consider doing something before next winter...

May I recommend heated gloves? Over here, https://gordonsheated.com but there must be European manufacturers to save on shipping.
I never liked winter gloves as the thickness is not giving a feel of confidence when you ride a bike... Not sure about heating gloves, but don't they have the same issue?

Possibly, but I'm not the best one to ask. Nerves going to my hands and feet suffer impingement where they exit the spinal column, so there's little feeling in my fingers and toes. That aside, having warm hands, including the backs of the hands and fingers is very satisfying.

I've also used (before heated gear) rubber kitchen gloves over light weight riding gloves. It's not as effective as heat, but they're definitely wind-proof. It can also be difficult to find them big enough. Along the same lines, 3-finger gloves, (actually thumb and two finger) may still be available from Aerostich, as well as "lobster claws" that fit over the bar ends - but they probably won't work with the hand-guards.

A compromise may be necessary, once you suffer frostbite, it seems harder to avoid. Good luck!
