Hi all.

Been having major internet hassles for last 5 weeks, so havn't been able to get on forum. Will have to catch up with all the gossip:)

Anyway, to celebrate my return to cyberspace i have an Ottantatre for sale.

It's a 1959 Ottantatre Sport in the very rare 'polychromatic' colour scheme. It is very bright and absolutly stunning in the 'flesh'.

It was restored a couple of years a go by a marque specialist and great friend, who unfortunatley is no longer with us. It is running perfectly but has not been used on the road and is not UK registered, i can of course supply a dating letter. There are a few small marks etc from storage but other than that it is bloody lovely.

I would love to have it myself but there are too many bikes around here already! I am acting on behalf of the widow of the restorer and the bike is in the UK.

The price is £2750 which is a bargain as it must have cost way more to restore it to this high standard.

Polychromatic? I am not sure if I love it or hate it but what I am sure of is that: I am completely captivated by it....... I've just spent an hour enlarging the photos & looking at the detail.

The Ottantantre (83), is it true that the name derives not only from its engine capacity in cc but also from its dry weight? Or is that a subsequent myth? The original colour scheme was black with red/white tank I believe?

That is very nice indeed. And from the looks of it, extremely reasonably priced (especially compared with what we have been seeing on here of late). I shan’t think that will hang around for long.

I'm trying to think what that colour scheme reminds me of?

That is a nice little machine Dorian, I quite like the colour scheme although if you described it to me without the photos I'm not sure I would have (if you get my drift!).

Hi all.

Yes, the standard and usual colour scheme was black frame with red and white body work. There might have been other standard colours but i can't remember at the moment.

The 'poylchromatic' scheme was a factory option and was available either in red and gold, as this bike, or blue and gold. As far as i know it was only available on the sport model.

This bike was red and gold from the factory so has always been this bright:) It was very advanced for the late 50s early 60s and must have been a 'breath of fresh air' in the UK what with all those drab british bikes.

I had never heard that the 83 was also derived from the weight, but a quick check in my paperwork and guess what?......83KG's declared weight. You learn something new every day.

Of course the other 83cc bike that MV made was the Checca 83. There are a very few engine parts that are the same, otherwise they are completly different machines. This can and has caused me a few problems in the past when people order parts for an MV 83 and don't tell me which one!

I just wish you could all see this bike in the flesh, it is bloody lovely:mouthwate

The scheme is idd special Dorian , but it has something .....can,t figure out what but it,s ....special and great :)

I came here via an image search hoping to find a picture of an MV 83cc in the same colour as the one I had in 1960, and this is the colour. I bought mine new in 1960 from Webster's of Crewe, in the UK. I was only 17 and I loved the look of it on the forecourt. Bill Webster had raced private MV 125s in the 1950s, including several IOM TT finishes. You can read a biography here....

While my bike was a great looker, it was pretty slow (as I should have expected at 83CC) and I was embarassed by a friend's Francis Barnet 150cc Plover which was much quicker.
Sadly a minor shunt resulted in damage to the top tube of the frame and a new frame was ordered. It took months and when it came it was the wrong colour (solid red).

The bike was rebuilt despite this but I was never happy with it again; who wants a three coloured bike? It was traded in for a S/H Royal Enfeld Clipper 250cc, not as handsome but quicker than a Francis Barnet Plover ;)

The registration mark of my MV was 707KTU, but I can find no trace of it on the DLV site. This is a B/W pic of me on the day I took delivery.

hmmm i cant remember seeing it before
having said that i have been hit in the head lots and lots of times so yeh err i cant remember

what do u think of it adrian, i think its very interesting, and a good entry level price

It's a nice looking bike Rob,and guess not to expensive as long as its running.

The colour was a factory option. The bike now resides in Hobart along with a Liberty Sport from 1966. Both bikes will be on display in a museum (possibly Launceston) some time in the near future.
