I have a question on some of the stats of the rich history of mv in racing,
now from what i have read they have won 75 world championships which is including rider and manufacturer titles, and 275 moto gp races.

now what i dont understand is that aprilia has past them up a few years back in moto gp victories and now hold 294, mv also has claimed winning 3000 races from 1948 to the late 70s, what do those wins consist of if there not considered motogp ?

Well taper41 they won 37 constructors titles and 38 riders titles in the FIM motorcycle world championship.
275 Grand Prix as You write. What is foggy about this facts to You ?
3000 won races means they won in national race series as the Italian championship for an example. MV Agusta raced with motorcycles/scooters on the road and off road. They won races like Milano-Taranto and of course also races of local interest.

Ah I don't want to minimize the success of Aprilia. They where dominant for several Years as well. In fact as much that for the last decade the majority of the field raced on Aprilia.
However Aprilia never managed to win the top class.
In addition I must say that the world championships of yesterday contained in the average no more than 8 Grand Prix compared to nowadays 16, 17 or 18 Grand Prix.
MV Agusta won the 500cc World Championship uninterrupted from 1958 until 1974.
And this is in deed something unparalleled and extraordinary.

Yes but mv's success can be looked at as diluted aswell, mv's racing success came at a time where 4 or 5 of those years they were the only factory team, i understand that aprilia has raced in a time where a season is 15 to 17 races long , but they have only raced in two classes where as mv raced in all categories available (4) and during the span there season averaged between 8 to 10. with that being said they both raced approximately the same amount of racing on the fim level ( Ive looked at the numbers) with aprilia having a higher winning percentage, remember the more races in a season the more difficult it is to win, due to consistencey. it is always harder to stay on top for a longer period of time. They have obviously had great success in the other world championship series aswell, where mv has not. On the same hand no one will ever be able to duplicate those 75 championships in the premium class, along with their undisturbed winning streak that you have mentioned.

Aprilia can be of course proud about their success, I'm not denying it.
So is the History of MV Agusta remarkable, unprecedented and not likely repeated.
And yes, right MV Agusta raced in 4 classes and won all classes in a few Years.
But they raced the 125 and 250 only until 1962.
Aprilia might won in other world championships (recently in WSBK)
But back in the days there was only one world championship series.
However it is comparing apples and pears.
Both companies raced in different eras.

no direct intention, just a good old fasion discussion, i have both aprilia rsv1000r 07 and an f4 and love them both passionately for different reason and i would agree that they are both the top pedigree in racing for there era's. Your absolutely right its comparing apples to oranges my friend. :yo:

Ive done some research on the racing history including the site that was given to me from this thread. What I dont understand is there seems to be 2 different numbers that keep popping up. a few sites say that there are 75 total world championships and others say 63. does anyone have an idea on why this may be ?

75 World Champs.....and this is certainly not the place to be if you want to belittle MVs racing heritage

well I own a 05' f4, I am certainly not here to belittle any of Mv's heritage. I just asked the question because I keep seeing these two different numbers I thought it was 75 aswell but was curious on where the number 63 is coming from are they not counting something ?

I looked at the heritage link that you had sent me, it states that the 3,000 wins were international, isnt the series such as the italian championship and BSB not consider international competition since by definition is worldly participation?

did you ever consider, what IDM stands for as an example?
"Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaft" or translated (International
German Championship). It is international as it has an international
field of riders.


Or as in other sports: do you consider Wimbledon a British Tennis tournament, although
no one could get the idea that it is not a top international tournament too.

Fire, that makes sense I understand. What is the difference from championships like these and World Superbike or Motogp which seams to be considered the highest level of competitive racing? Why do they not consider these World Championships If most of the same manufacturers participate?

Duhh........they are not considered World Championships because they aren't!!!
The fact is that a national series will never have World status just because of it's participants.

All major race series in any country could be considered a "win" internationally....

All that really matters....the only number of any true importance....is that 37 Constructor's Championships in the top GP class....the one that the MV logo with all the stars represents.

All the other numbers are irrelevant.
