A mate recently asked if I could copy the wings from his Ducati V4 and make them fit his R1.

I proceeded rib him senseless as I am neither a particular fan of the wings, but also the idea of 'just' adding wings for the appearance, without any idea of the actual impact either positive or negative.

He then sent me this picture, informing me that it's all MV's fault.

Its from 1974, Phil Reed at Spa. Apparently it's from a video, I've asked for a link for those interested.

Here's the link, Reed is at 45s, 1:51. at 4:30 during the race its clear he did not race with that fairing.

Yup, winglets have been around for a long time...of no benefit to a street user though.

Depends how quick you go! All joking aside it appears that they only used the wings for practice and then abandoned it. They do look more integrated than some modern approaches.

The R1 is his race bike, the V4 his road bike.
