OK, below is a fairly detailed report of our trip to Monza.



What i did monza by MVTEAM aged 31 1/3 :wink:



Arrive at Luton airport and just make check in only to be told that no baggage has been booked for us and we are going to have to pay to get all our bags and rider kit over.............£160 later and we're running to the departure lounge only to stand around and wait :( land in milan and the weather is absolutely stunning :D :D :D :D so off we go to collect our hire car.....................which turns out to be a nissan Micra :( the military style operation of getting all our kit plus 4 people into the car was impressive to say the least (nice one wurz) and off we trundle to find the circuit. Now i had plannned ahead and brought my tomtom with me but had this nasty thought that i had left it in howies car :( so we navigated the old way by map and eventually found Monza circuit and got ourselves into the track :D



wow what a place, pit lane is about as wide as cadwell's start straight is long :wink: truely awe inspiring place. We find EVR and start introducing ourselves, unfortunatly and this is no fault of anyones but language is going to be a massive problem as only one person speaks a little english and none of us know any italian :( but we'll try our best.



we start building the bike with howies suspension and rearsets etc to make it feels more like his own bike and are done by mid afternoon, the EVR guys help out and finish the prep work after our parts are installed and get the bike off to the scrutineers.





now the mission is on to find our hotel, which is made all the easier by finding my tomtom in the bag of suspension and not having been left in howies car.......oooooooops :oops: finally we roll up to the hotel and check in, first thing you do obviously is switch the TV on and flick through the channels, to which i'm greeted by hardcore porn :? :shock: , thinking its whatever the last occupant was watching i tell everyone else so they check their TV's and no its the default channel everytime you switch the tv on.......pay per veiw though :roll: :wink: . anyway we go out for a meal and meet up with a friend of ours in milan. all was going swimmingly untill on the way back we got a taste of a proper weekend away racing and crashed the hire car :oops: :cry: nissan micras do not crash well.........mitsubishi shoguns however do :( .



on the way back to the hotel at a now rather reduced pace we see why porn is the default tv channel as the place is littered with prostitutes, shame cos the rooms and facilities are excellent.



off to the track on friday for free practice and howie goes out to learn the track and quickly starts getting to grips with another teams bike and by the end of the session posts a respectable 1'55.9s and has a list of things that need sorting. but on the whole he his happy, loves the circuit and knows he can go much much faster :D :D with quite afew hours spare we get the bike back and start doing the work needed, change some front pads and bleed the brakes, change shock spring and a general clean and inspection of the bike.



out for 2nd qualifying and things are going much better with the times coming down all the time, after his new tyre was fitted he was sat in 32nd place then jumps to 26th on the next lap and then 22nd the lap after and then unfortunatly on the last lap as the session ended howie crashed :cry: :cry:



So here is where there has been lots of gossip and speculation about what happened and this is what i can tell you. the corner that howie crashed on is a very fast part of the circuit but the bike is hardley lent over, no knee down no pushing the front etc its just a very fast sweeping 160+mph bend. the front just let go for no reason. this was not a high side or overuse of the throttle as has been suggested, it is impossible to wash the front out by being heavy handed on the throttle. at the point where he crashed there were 2 bikes parked up, one on each side of the track, no idea why but they were not crashed just broken down. So maybe there was a fluid of some sorts on the track we'll never know for sure as when howie crashed everyone went on a go slow lap thus luckily no one else would have run into it. the front tyre did look like it had been through something, maybe water as the dust on the tyre just didn't look right. anyway howie sustained some bruising and few interesting scars but flew home early to get fit for snetterton.



All the damage on the bike was to the rear of the bike which matches howies account of events immediatley after getting out of the med centre so for me his explanation is more than ample. Howie proved that with the right people around him he is a good rider and showed some of his potential in just 30 or so laps at a track he had never ridden before, the people who needed to see him ride are very very very impressed and the only dissapointment is that things ended so early as they were truely looking forward to seeing howie progress further up the qualifying field towards the front, but suffice to say they are happy.



Yes i am gutted for EVR, (edo and the guys) we all really wanted to bring home a good result for them this weekend but instead brought back a batttered bike and rider, but we will see them again i'm sure. Language between our two teams was an issue and this made working together quite difficult, it is noones fault but our own as our grasp of italian extended to flicking through caz's phrase book and lots of gestures trying to describe various words :? but we tried our best and i hope were as polite as possible given the circumstances, maybe we should have hired a translater or something, i dont know for sure but the language barrier did make things awkward. to EVR i'm sorry, (the damages are covered btw) we're all sorry that we didnt get the result we knew we could get, but we proved a point, that howie is fast, very fast infact when in the right enviroment and the potential is quite big.



we'll be back doing a euro round before the end of the year i'm sure :)





i also beleive that a few other riders crashed over the weekend on the same corner, one of them being Badavini who high sided at almost exactly the same spot, i undertsand he was ok but do not know the specfics of the crash but it just goes to show that even a localish rider can be unlucky and crash.



TO EVR and MV we thank you as team for inviting us over and letting us show you a percentage of what we as a team are capable of and we'll be back racing against you in europe some time soon. now all i need to figure out is a way of losing a few years off of martin and getting him out for the europe sstk aswell :wink:

Thanks Chris,sounds like you guys were giving it a real go,best of luck for the rest of the year,I`m sure if Howie keeps it on the black stuff he`ll do very well :highclap:

Thanks Chris...I saw the practice times and have been searching as to where Howie got to in the race.....no wonder I couldn't find his name....such a shame as I'm sure it would have been a good result.

Thank You Chris, for the inside Story ! I was there in Monza and didn't found You guys. But I must admit that I was not to franticly searching for, since I was at Gimotorsport and we had with Pier, Ulla and Mike some Forum Members there. Sorry for the disapointment and thanks god nothing seriously happened to Howie. Yes I was missing him in the Race. But it seams to be a dark season for MV Agusta in General. Ayrtons Crash and Howie crash. Napo not there because of the Assen crash, Ayrtons Collision, Biliotti taken out because of another crash. And so on as we had already not enough misfortunes in Donnington, Valencia and Assen. Also our FBF Squad in US is not bathing in Fortunes. Joerg in Germany could not even reach the Start of the Seasons first Race but won the Second. Hey things can only get better and I'm sure the Sun will shine on You and all the MV Agusta Teams again. We are standing behind You !

x81............was it you i spoke to at oulton? are you the manager of x bikes team? i was the guy in the mv hat asking lots of questions about the bike n team etc. if it was you thanks for spending a bit of time with me it was appreciated. ill be at the next oulton round plus cadwell and donny also be doin wsb at brands. are youthinking of wildcarding there? regards ian

yeah that was me, short skin head bloke with glasses. X-bikes is my shop and so by default i spose i'm also the team owner/manager;) mind you when it all goes wrong i'm just a spanner monkey. i'm hoping we can get a wildcard or two in this year but really need to focus on the british stuff tbh, as i still don't have any type of title sponsorship, well any sponsorship to be fair so i'm limited as to what i can achieve outside of the UK stuff.

always welcome to pop by, next time you'll maybe get a cup of coffee;)

lol cool!!! wouldnt mind looking at those harris 4 pot exhausts you got made for the bike either, even tho you reverted to the zard ones for the race, what exactly was wrong with em? are you gona try em again in future?

they are a development set of cans, should be anew set coming through with some different ends and some weight reductions.

the cans have valves and other gubbins inside them which should help gas flow and extract some extra power.

have got a web site that has only just gone live so isn't populated with a lot of info but it will be shortly.

Very cool writeup.

I think I know the spot you're talking about where the crash happened.

Bizzare. But I guess even a very minor amount of fluid is game over at that speed if the bike is anything less than perfectly straight up and down. Even then, the way some of these bikes spin the back tire down the straight (or do they do that anymore? They sure used to) it could be a big problem.

(At Daytona when Nicky Hayden was riding the RC-51, his back tire was going something like 25mph faster than his front tire down the straight.)

yeah better late than never, so fair play to them we did at least get some acknowledgement for the win and the fact that it was the first for 35 years.:)
