Can anyone tell me how to get the steering bearing caps out.
Tried getting a screwdriver under lip with no success.
Can I heat in an oven or over a gas flame to heat the cast so it will expand slightly so I can try to get under the cap with a fine screwdriver

Hahaha, we posted at the same time. Ok so it's the bearing outer race in the steering bearing housing, You can heat the whole lot in an oven then quickly cool just the bearing race. I've done a few and just knock them out from the other end that way, at least one of them is easy to get out, the other is a bastard but heating helps as the housing heats up at a different rate to the bearing.
A Dremel tool is very handy too.

Just apply a dab of weld to the bearing surface..It only takes a quick dab.
The bearing cup will crack and drop out without any drama whatsoever.
I've done a few bikes like this.

?

You can use a rounded tree shape carbide burr to cut notches in the steering tube ....

Just go deep enough to be able to use a punch from the other end

Notched the front wheel bearing support tube for the same reason
