So earlier today I took my F4 312RR for a ride with few chaps from the forum, bike ran like a dream all morning. Got home let it cool down then headed of to see a friend before my scheduled afternoon appointment. Half way there she started missing and farting after every corner (worse after a right hand turn). To me it sounded like fuel starvation. Pulled in and filled her up. 8 litres so she had about 1/2 a tank. Problem solved, bike ran fine the rest of the day. I’m thinking there’s an issue with the fuel pick up in the tank. Has anyone else had this issue or know what the cause might be? Or is this normal?

During the mornings ride we stopped regularly for fuel and it never took more than 6.2 litres and the fuel light did not come on

Not normal, mine runs down to nothing. You may well be right. The tank internals need regular service. The pick up filters can clog and or break up. Fuel hoses perish and the main filter also needs changing every few years.

@ZackAttack - It is probably time to get into your tank internals if you haven't. As above, Fuel Lines are supposed to be replaced every three years with immersible J30 R10 spec hose. Fuel Filter should also be changed.

What is the last maintenance done on your machine before the fuel issue?

I had a situation where the Quick Fuel Connections were not passing the appropriate fuel quantity to keep my 312R running.

none by me, have only had it a week, checked the fluids and took it for a ride. I’ve reached out to who I believe was the previous owner who is a member of the forum for any service history but haven’t had a response as yet.

So, while I’m at it I figure I’ll take some steps to deal with the heat issues. can anyone tell from the photo if this is the standard or upgraded water pump? I’m looking at the Motocorse pump upgrade from evolution bike and adding engine ice while I’m at it. Bike already has the manual fan override switch.

Were it me, I'd find a qualified tuner and have the ECU tuned. Fixing the Ignition Tables does more for your perceived "heat problem" that any other mode you can make.
I would also get inside that fuel tank and check out the Fuel Pump Plate components to see if there is a fuel delivery issue. This will also have the benefit of forcing you to inspect the Fuel Fittings and see if they are degraded or improperly seated.

Cannot tell about the pump until you pull the hose and cover off and look at the impeller.

Yes I fully intend to get inside the tank to diagnose the fuel issue (have already ordered the hose and filter), "while I am at it" I thought I would take the opportunity to take some steps to deal with the heat issue, perceived or not when the gauge says 118 degrees whilst stopped for a short time at road works I consider that to be hot. So whilst the bike is apart it would make sense to me to take that opportunity to replace the coolant and upgrade the water pump which by all accounts seems to be a common upgrade. In fact I believe MV even released an upgraded impellor for the "perceived" heat issue.

And given I have no service history for the bike (as indicated in my previous post) a coolant change is in order anyway so why not upgrade the pump at the same time.

As for tuning, yes I agree that will also improve the bike's performance and running temps, however as yet I have not located anyone in Western Australia who can do it and has a good enough reputation for me to entrust them with this task.

The MV upgraded impeller does stuff all.
Buy a Jetprime pump, it works well.
Install a fan over-ride switch. It will help also.
Hey Mitch, the bike already has a fan over-ride switch and by the look of it it has a 3rd fan as well (upper left side). I'm thinking there is a coolant flow issue at low rpm's hence the water pump change.

If you go with jetprime know that the quality is spot on. Purchased one years ago. It’s flawless to date. It’s so nice looking I wanted to keep it on my desk.

I've been bleeding money lately and the jetprime is a little expensive for me at the moment. So went with this from Evolution Bike

Had ordered it before all the advice on the jetprime. I know how this ends, in a month or so I'll end up buyin the jetprime

Do as you do. Most importantly is a full system without air pockets. And yes Engine Ice is swell but requires changing more often than conventional. —No big deal really. That pump most likely will be fine. No worries. Many ways the skin an MV, a cat. Alright that’s a gross expression. Sorry.

You will, that pump you bought looks similar to the OE pump.

Definitely service the tank internals is a good move.
Just FYI, I once had hesitation and rough running from my F4 and after changing the fuel pump and plumbing I still had the issue.
After weeks and eventually broke down, I discovered that the problem was a loose ground connection at the battery.
So, it's a good move to check your grounds as am intermittently disconnected fuel pump gives the symptoms of a faulty fuel system.

Thanks Joe, definitely going to go through the tank, I also want to check the tank is venting properly as the issue only occurred around the 1/2 full mark and there was a pressure difference when I opened the tank to fill it up. It’s not the original tank cap so that could be part of the issue who knows. Fuel hose, clamps and filter arrived today, not sure yet if I’ll replace the other fittings this time around.
