hi guys. Im looking to buy an F4 740 and saw a nice looking example today. Upon reading the service history i saw an advisory from its last service which said 'chrome hardening on camshafts-may need replacing in 8000 miles'...
ive called various dealers and been told that this isnt an inherant problem and didnt really know what it actually meant, offering that it may not have been that bad if they were replaced into the engine during the service. there is no mention of chrome flaking etc

ive called the actual garage but there are shut today.
the bike has done 18k..should i just walk away and look for another machine?
as a Ducati nut im well away of chrome flaking issues on DesmoQuattro rockers etc and this can be catastrophic..One dealer quoted me £1800 for a pair of cams + other parts (followers presumably)+labour...
Any advice would be great

you dont say what year the bike is?, I do know from my own experience that there was a bad batch of cam followers made on the 2000 single rad model and mv did admit this because it happened to mine ,your man is right about the price of the new cams, but i woudnt worry you can pick up cams nowadays for not a lot of money

thanks for the info guys..the bike is a 2001 model.
ive since had further quotes for camshafts from D&K and these are an eye watering £1300 EACH plus VAT, plus followers etc at £600, plus labour...
I intended to talk to Midlands Superbikes concerning the service however, ive since learnt that they are in administration!
Thank you also for the link to the article...it was very helpful...obviously i havent physically seen the marks or wear on the cams so i cant compare with the photos. My only reasurrance is that the mechanic replaced the cams during the service, so presumably they were not too bad...having said that, i dont believe that Midland Superbikes are/were MV specialists(?)
When the engine was running it sounded absolutely fine. There were no undue noises coming from the crankcases or any 'cammy' noises, rattles etc from the top of the engine. We let in run for approx 10 mins until the cases were hot and the engine note reamined constant..
Would there be any kind of horrible valve noise or anything to indicate a problem? Its a lovely bike and i wouldnt want to walk if its not a problem, on the other hand i dont want to walk into a world of pain.
There was no previous mention in the ptherwise comprehensive service history prior to the Midland Superbikes service...The only other recurring problem was with the instrument display.
Where are cheap camshafts available (should it need them at some point?)

The only cams that I thought were faulty were the original batch of SPR cams, which were replace as a recall. I got mine replaced under warranty on my SR, due to a bad batch of hardening. Mine were apparently pretty good when they were pulled out but some had pitted quite badly at low kms.

Didn't know that there was an issue with the standard 750's
