After reading way to many horror stories of over tightening the chain I figure I would post. After dropping my bike off to get the 7,500 mile service I specifically mentioned not to over tighten the chain. When I picked it up today it was the first thing I looked at... to my knowledge it looked waaaay to tight. But what do i know, so I asked to talk to the mechanic that worked on my bike (this being a actual mv dealer) if he would come look at it and tell me if he thinks its ok. Long story short I get it home and look at the manual and according to the diagram and numerous posts on this site I should have roughly .24 inches from the chain guard to the top of the chain. Needless to say its not even close there is actually no visible chain running under the chain guard. I have pictures if someone wants to host them. My question is what should I do? The dealer is not close and all ready had the bike for 2 weeks. Should I try and adjust it my self? There's no way I'm going to ride the thing the way it sits.

So in the manual it refers to a "special spanner" tool... what is that?

its a tool used to adjust chain length, used after you undo both rear pinch bolts.....should have came in your tool kit. It is the tool that looks like a C with a handle.

Have a good read first and borrow a torque wrench (10-60nm) from someone etc.
The manuals all refer to metric measurements as I believe all motorcycles now use metric tooling. (I stand corrected)
Put your bike on the rear axle stand or let someone hold it up straight for you.
There should be at least 8mm between the bottom of the swing-arm guard and the middle of the chain - Rather a bit more than a bit less !!!
To adjust the chain - 1. Undo the two pinch bolts at the rear of the swing-arm and take a note of how tight they feel - keep in mind that if the dealer could not adjust your chain correctly in the first place, then they probably also overtightened these bolt !!!
2. Once you loosened these two bolts, you can rotate the axle to achieve the amount of chain slack you require using the C-spanner and handle which should be in your tool kit.
3. THIS is important, you now tighten those to bolts back up to the specified spec only, NO tighter please.
And then go ride and have a great weekend.

It's funny I can find everything else that came with the bike but the spanner tool... is that something I could find locally or would it have to be special ordered?
