I hate coming onto forums to spam etc.. But I make carbon fibre fuel tanks and have been asked about doing the F3 tank in carbon.. I am sort of looking to get some information. I cannot seem to find anyone doing them at the moment so is that because there is no demand or is it because no one has done it... The ones I do at the moment are all Aprilia's as the tanks are plastic and swell. So although I have heard a few stories and Chris at X Bikes has said he knows of the odd one too.. I was looking to see if it is worthwhile.. I know they are complex and not a small tank so would never be cheap. I was estimating about £1500.00 for a pre-preg carbon tank sealed against ethanol attack which is the cause of the swelling and made to work like the OEM tank with all the original fittings and will take the original fuel cap.

Its just a bit of research and possibly one or two of you will have seen my work elsewhere so know what I can do.....
For those who dont here are a few example images..

Any information or ideas would be great.. Cheers guys and I am sorry if this feels spammy....

It's always less "Spammy" when you give up a name, luckily I've seen some of your posts elsewhere.:)

Fact is that most of the swelling in the plastic tanks have been overcome with a redesign and several owner management options. (Fuel stabilisers and more effective tank liners as I use come to mind).
The other negative is price, as you mentioned.:bawling:
Lastly, racers are banned from using carbon tanks in most Countries.

My opinion doesn't matter, but I think it's awesome and I'd love one if I needed one.

Good luck, hope it works out for you, just keep forum sale / sponsor rules in mind please.

Your work looks amazing. I've done a bit of pre-preg in the past and know how hard it is to sort out. As Donsy said, the new tanks are pretty much all sorted and bar bikes that have been sold on, many were replaced under warranty (as mine was) when it swelled. A year and a bit later and it's still ok.

Also racers generally aren't allowed carbon tanks, so many I know are using GRP covers (due to the plastic tanks and scarcity of getting a spare if they crash).

I do recall someone on here having an ali tank made up.

That said if you want a tank to make/use as a mould (or any other faring parts) I am in the UK and have a spare tank and fairings.

Good luck.

My name is Rich... I run P3 Composites which you may see on farcebook...

Its just one of those things that keep popping up with someone here or there asking... But it sort of seems random so I have never been sure. I would love to make one of every bike I could. But the cost of the moulds is a killer for something that may never sell enough to even cover the cost of the mould....

Racing.. I know some places will require testing which a carbon tank could pass ( I know the guy who made all the Aprilia race bike carbon which included all of the carbon tanks). But testing is not cheap... I have a few of my RS250 tanks being used in Italy in their 2 stroke race series..

Hi Richard, I spent a lot of hours researching for a carbon fiber tank, nothing, zero.... I also learned that the market for the F3 is not so big..... by the way, this a modified F3 tank made on aluminum which have more capacity and smoother racing lines to make the mould job easier. (this aluminum tank do not need the side covers or the injectors covers)

I think you will get more people wanting a full carbon fiber subframe complete with seat unit like this one:

http://shift-tech-carbon.com/onlineshop/product_info.php?products_id=1369&MODsid=f7dbcd1d6f12552a06ba60b42a0091bb (this is for the Panigale)

Either way, thank or subframe, I will get the money to get one of each.... count with me.

Keep us posted.

Like the self supporting seat unit idea...
I had to make a full monocoque for one of my projects.. It is a bit of work to get done but saves a LOT of weight if it can be done right...

The alloy tank is nice but copying it as it does have a few changes to make it different is cheeky and I would not be too happy someone copying my design if it happened to me... Its just I had one guy asking to buy 2 or 3 F3 tanks if I make them and one or two more asking about them over the past 12 months too.. Its just needing 10 to make it worth it when you add in the £3000+ to make the mould and any other work to prep the tank to be copied and make it suitable for being moulded.

Saying that though as I do all the work myself (apart from making the moulds as I use a guy who only makes moulds and does a really good job of it) I can only make about 3 tanks a month if I work flat out anyway.. So if I have say one each of the Aprilia RS250, Aprilia Falco and an MV Agusta or other tank to do thats me done for a month. I also do work for a car company too so in reality two tanks and some other work that I have to do would be my limit per month. In the past week I have two RS250 tanks and one complete fairing kit to make plus a TVR airbox, 2 TVR seat backs and some dash trim to do. There is the next 4 weeks full..

But adding a few more tanks to the list is good so if I could say have 10 tank moulds I would possibly be busy for a couple of years and might never make more than 3 or 4 from each mould.

Really good looking stuff Richard. I have a TVR with carbon plenum and airbox, along with carbon trumpets.

Good luck and let me know if you need any templates.

I'd go for a carbon subframe to the F4 2016. Also a carbon tank, and probably lots of other stuff!!

Are those F3 tanks with tail units?
If so may be interested.
