Riding home today my alternator light flickered on and off then stayed on managed to get home ok and had a look at problem .

Recent work on my bike was a starter solenoid change as the original failed so check charge nothing checked fuse in the starter solenoid "melted" see pics fitted new fuse bike charges but new solenoid goosed I sourced the new solenoid of eBay as it was cheap around £13.

looks like I should have bought an original even though the ebay listing says it was Japanese but I suspect not it was also rated at 30amp fuse instead of 40 so the moral is Buy cheap Buy twice.

gone for a refund as clearly not fit for the job and the ebay sellers response:
Hi
Not a problem please return to the address on the listing.
Are you sure it is the solenoid at fault as if it had a 40amp fuse it could of set your bike on fire as the fuse is a safety switch only acts a cut out
the lower amps you have the quicker it will cut out. I have sold these for 5 years and as far as I can remember not heard of this problem before.
There is no point in me selling sub standard goods or all the parts I sell would come back! and this is how I make my living.
With a 40 amp fuse it would of taken longer to cut out.
Also you have to ask why did my original one burn out before you blame the replacement part.
Don't forget you have an Italian bike which basically are rubbish for electrics

The original was 14 yrs old lasted longer than his one month one

I have heard that the Yamaha R1 solenoid id the same so I may source one of them

I had an eBay one as well. It lasted about 400 yards of a ride till the battery light came on.
I had fitted it just before I was off to Italy and was testing it.

Came back parked up, removed the key and put it on the rear stand. It then turned itself over, no one near the bike and no power on !
If it was on the side stand and in gear it would have ended up in a heap at the end of the garage.

It also melted the fuse - put the old one back in and it is still going today.

I originally swapped it out as now and again the relay would do a couple of clicks before starting. I think it was all down to the alarm in the end - I had some very strange electrical gremlins - ripped it all out and all was good.

I'll dig out the eBay details and post them up laters.....

The Ebay name was 'into motorbikes'

Cost me £13.50, Looks like he doesn't have them anymore though unless you purchased the last one lol.

I may have jumped the gun on this as I have fitted an new solenoid and everything runs ok except battery light off at tickover and comes on when revved .

Some more testing to do but it looks like the alternator is shot only done 9000 miles in 11 years so anyone out there got one or know of a repairer in the UK ?
