I decided for peace of mind, I would check my valves at the recommended 600 miles (598 actual miles). Well, I guess I am glad I did, but not too happy about what I found. Below are pictures of an exhaust camshaft lobe for cylinder #4, valve #9.

This camshaft will have to be replaced. If I had continued to run the bike as is, I would have run the risk of this camshaft lobe disintegrating and causing serious engine damage.

By the way, after purchasing a new 1987 1000 Ninja I checked the valves at 500 miles and found exactly the same thing as I just found on my MV. At the time I didn't know what was going on. The shop I bought it from said I "wiped" a camshaft and I could get it replaced under warranty. So I've owned 8 new bikes, 2 of them have had bad camshafts at the first service. That's a 25% rate!

hmmh. i had my first service and the dealer said that the exhaust cam looked to be wearing. thing is, they put it all back together and gave the bike back to me, so, i looked into it and it seems that quite a few do have done it. my bike now has 3k on it and runs fine, but seeing this makes me think. I think its time to take the head off again and check to see if its got any worse.
Whats the worse case scenario, ie, if you carried on riding yours and the worse did happen, what would that be?

I do all my own work. It wasn't hard to get to the valves as much as time consuming since I take detailed notes as I go and take pictures of each phase so that putting it all back together is painless as I can make it. The service manual helps a little.

I am not a mechanic and don't have a lot of experience with this sort of situation. So anything I say is merely speculation which doesn't help anyone. I did have this happen on a Kawasaki and it looked to be about what I have with the MV with respect to the degree of damage. The Kawasaki dealership said it had to be replaced ... there was no question at the time that riding with the damaged cam was not an option.

I wasn't going to post pictures of the pits I saw since they weren't significant compared to the other damage. But since you mention it, here are a couple of pictures.

If those pits were all that I had, I might be reluctant to make an issue about them. But I would be concerned and want to monitor them and make sure they didn't grow into something more significant.

Those pits on the edge suck though. I'd be chewing on someone's ear over that one.

I hope your lobe problem is just the one that's been seen before and not a big deal.

I've looked at my cams twice and I haven't seen this problem. It's almost time to look again though.

Thanks for the link, I wasn't aware of that FAQ. Regardless, I am not going to run my bike with a camshaft which has a manufacturing flaw as significant as this. Why are the other lobes polished to a mirror finish? I find it hard to believe that MV would spend money unnecessarily to finish engine components to such a high degree of polish if it didn't really matter. Nope, this flaw is not acceptable.

If I have to pay for it out of pocket, that's the way it goes. I have almost $40K in this machine. To ride around wondering, everytime I hear a noise from the engine, whether the "small scratches" are causing my engine to be seriously damaged isn't worth the savings of the cost of a camshaft. Of course, I will attempt to make a warranty claim.

I didn't think it was an issue on the 1000's. I have had both of my camshafts replaced under warranty at 24k, due to that very same pitting (mine after 24,000km was certainly not as bad as yours) but that was supposed to be a specific issue with SPR 750 (my SR has the SPR engine)camshafts because the entire batch were supposed to be faulty. My service agent told me that he automatically replaces the cams on every SPR, if it has not already been done, as a matter of course

Could be the same thing with your Senna. Bummer!

how do u guys solve this problem ? is it covered under waranty ? does this happen to the newer bikes ?

If its under waranty does the replacement will have the same effect ??
