After months of searching (and a timely ebay alert from Dorian) I finally won the shocks I needed for my 1974 350 GT. Unfortunately the seller painted them red not black, but sometimes bidders can't be choosers. Now I want to paint them black and I'm hoping for advice on taking them apart - any chance for a schematic diagram? And if I disassemble them, any chance for finding replacement seals?

With luck there's a photo attached.

Thanks,

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm.

On this type the 'collets' are at the bottom of the spring.

You just need to compress the spring (there not that heavy) and remove the collects to enable the spring and top cover to come off.

I think there is then a threaded coller, that you might need a special tool for, which will enable the rod and internals to be withdrawn.

Seals should be available from a bearing specialist i imagine, but as to oil type and quantity you will have to experiment.

There are specialists that do suspension, so it might be worth hunting one down in your area to see if they can help.

I have not seen a exlpoded view or manual for these type of shocks.

All the best and hope this helps.

Dorian.

Thanks, Dorian

I'll see how far I get, and meanwhile ask around for a pro. I can't imagine it is too difficult, but that's what I think at the start of a lot of projects.
