Factory Status

Each Manufacturer, (including motorcycle manufacturers and chassis manufacturers), can choose to enter up to 4 riders for the season who will participate with “Factory” status.

I thought this season was exciting, however, next season could be even better.

How exactly is that going to change anything? Ducati and Honda already run 4 factory riders. Yamaha has two factory riders and two satellite riders and will be not be changing that anytime soon.

No. Each team only has 2 factory riders, right now.

Riders who results matter for winning the factory championship.

Now if you want to win the championship you had better have 4 strong riders and all the bikes up to top specifications.

There is not anything preventing the manufacturers from running 4 factory riders now (except maybe not enough money). In fact Honda ran Pedrosa, Stoner, and Dovizioso on Repsol Honda's in 2011 with Somincelli being on a full factory Honda that year as well. For 2013 all Ducati riders have full "factory" bikes that are exactly the same. All 4 Honda's are full "factory" bikes this year as well, with the only difference being that Bautista has to run Showa suspension and Nissan brakes in order to be able to get the full factory bike. Now that Bradl has switched to Brembo brakes his Honda is exactly the same as the Repsol bikes and that's why Honda is not impressed with his races so far this year.

That leaves Yamaha who only has 2 factory riders and that's because they don't have the budget (or so they say) to pay 4 factory riders. If they didn't have to pay Rossi and Lorenzo so much Crutchlow would have a factory contract as well.

As an example, there isn't anything preventing Honda from running Rossi, Lorenzo, Pedrosa, and Marquez as factory riders if they could. It would just cost way to much. So that being said I am curious what you think is going to change next year.

No. The rules state you can only have 2 factory riders.

However, close or not close other bikes are to what the main riders are on are completely irrelevant to the championship. Those bikes count for nothing when it comes to winning the factory championship.


Now, if a manufacturer wants to win the championship they will have to put in a serious effort into having 2 more top riders with all the top riding equipment.

Marquez, Pedrosa, and Bradl all have HRC factory contracts and all 4 Honda bikes are factory bikes with the exception of Bautista who agreed to develop the Showa suspension and Nissin brakes in order to secure a full factory bike. All 4 Ducati riders this year have factory contracts and all 4 bikes are factory bikes. The 2013 rule just says that they can only run two riders under their official team but they can run however many they want with factory "status" with a max of 4 factory bikes. For 2014 they are limited to 4 riders with factory status and the rest of the bikes have to be customer bikes, leased engine bikes, etc.

So its really just a change in the wording.

For the Ducati Corse, HRC, & Yamaha Racing factory (old definition) teams, things pretty much remain the same: though the OEM-backed teams will race in 2014 with one fewer engine for the year (a total of five for the season now), and with only 20-liters of fuel. Each manufacturer will be limited to four “factory” machines, though OEMs can still fill the ranks with “non-factory” machines

I guess it doesn't really matter what the wording is in the end, I think we are just interpreting the same thing in a different way. I am more curious as to what you think is going to make for better racing. The teams are going to pretty much be the same as far as riders go with the exception of Ducati who will be filling Haydon's seat. And Crutchlow who is rumored to be just about everywhere. The customer bikes should be more competitive than the current CRT's but they still won't be up there with the Honda's and Yamaha's.

The rules. You can only have 2 riders with factory status. Those are the rules.

You are not understanding what factory status is.

Factory status means the riders results count for winning the team championship.

Cal Crutchlow's results do not count for yamaha's team, in fact when he beats factory Yamaha , he is making Yamaha lose more in the championship.

Factory status, has nothing to do with contracts and nothing to do with the specs of the motorcycle.

Factory status is who is eligible to compete for winning the team championship.

Ok, lets say you are correct. You are still not answering the question. What difference do you think its going to make? What is going to make the racing even better? Do you honestly think Honda is going to now send out 4 riders on Repsol bikes to win the "Team" championship?

There are 3 titles to be had in MotoGP.

1. Riders. All points scored by the rider at each race will count towards the riders title.
2. Constructers. Only the highest placed motorcycle of each constructer will gain points according to the position in the race. This is regardless of which team it is. So when Crutchlow is the highest placed Yamaha his points go toward the constructers title.
3. Team. Teams in the MotoGP class are in principle comprised of two riders. All points scored by both riders in the Team, including substitutes or replacements, will count towards the Team Championship. In the case of a one rider Team, only the points scored by that rider will count towards the Team Championship. Wild card riders will not score points for the Team Championship.
