Hi guys,

I've had this bike for a month and have had no issues until this morning. First off while it idles it sounds a bit weak. Starting off in first gear is awful. It's very sluggish and doesn't kick in until more throttle than usual. I haven't noticed any issues with the other gears and when the bike is at speed it's very smooth. The last issue is when I pull the clutch in and come to a full stop and sometimes just before, the bike will shut off. It fires backup right after though. Any thoughts?

Fouled plugs? Idle speed a bit low, needs tuning??? TPS setting is off (part of tuning)....Those are my ideas.

Thanks! I was just outside letting it idle in neutral. It would cut off after about a minute or so. Do you thinkthiscould bea fuel filter issue? The Bike had 18k miles on it when I got it and who knows whit was last replaced.

Since you don't know the service history, I'd start by performing all the necessary work. That way you have a good baseline for future maintenance.

All good advice....you said it runs okay above idle and on the gas??? That probably rules out the filter, but old dead E10 gas residue in the injectors could be a cause.

Besides replacing the filter and other basic maintenance (brake fluid, coolant, etc) try dumping a good dose of a quality fuel injection system cleaner in the tank....

And start using ethanol gas treatment (several good choices out there...I like StarTron and LP Ethanol Equalizer).

Thanks for the help guys! I just filled it up a few days ago. Should I drain the fuel and then add the injector cleaner with new gas? Or can I just add it to what's already in there? Also are there any web sites or downloads/videos showing the proper tank and air box removal? I have found only written instructions but I'm a visual guy haha.

I just got back from a 5 mile round trip to advanced auto. The bike shut off at every traffic light. First gear starts are sluggish, similar to if your going uphill in the wrong gear. I also noticed that sometime with a quarter turn of the throttle, there is no response, then all of a sudden it kicks in. And occasionally i hear a light "tick" when im on the throttle. I bought a siphon and some sea-foam. That was the only thing they had that mentioned motorcycle engines on it. Is sea foam ok to use? I just don't understand how everything was fine yesterday and the past month and then all of a sudden I'm having these issues. I really hope it's not a thousand dollar problem. The semester just started and I'm going to be low on funds for a while which is why I'm hoping I can figure this all out and fix it on my own.

I failed to mention that the bike got up to 280 degrees in game day traffic last week. I didn't notice since it was already hot out until a cop pointed out that I had coolant leaking all over the place. The temp jumped quickly as it was right at 190 when I hit traffic and I must have been sitting for about 10 minutes. I shut it off and let it cool down. It started up and I've had no issues until today. Do I need more coolant? Does the overheating have anything to do with my current issues? I wouldn't think it would considering I've been driving it every day since then. Can someone please reach through my screen and smack me in the face?

Don't sweat the momentary overheat. Only add coolant if the level is below the minimum mark on the tank when cold, and only to the minimum mark.
You may have just bought some crap gas. Seafoam is fine....any automotive fuel injection system cleaner will be fine.
You can buy Startron at WalMart in the fishing gear section (originally created for outboard engines...they really hate ethanol).

StarTron, definitely, to help clean the system out and rule out a few things. You can just dump some in the tank and run the engine for about 20 minutes. You can't overuse it as the stuff is combustible, so you can't hurt anything. I used it on one of my bikes when it was very sluggish (bike had been sitting for a while and not behaving). By the time I got home 15 miles later, she was running much smoother! I don't know if this will fix your problems, but it is easy to do and will cost you less than $10.

Just now, I pumped all the old fuel out and added some fresh fuel and seafoam. The bike started up and sounded a little better, I gave it some throttle and had a little white smoke. I let it idle for about 10 or 15 minutes which is the longest it's ever idled which is good I guess. It doesn't sound as bad as yesterday but I'd say it doesn't sound like its all in synch, if that makes any sense. I put it in first gear and had the same problem as yesterday, sluggish, lots of vibration, then eventually it catches and takes off.
After riding it around the block, I went back home and tried to show a friend what the take off from first looks and sounds like and the bike stalled out about 10 times. I've been riding for 5 years and I've probably stalled out 3 times. Starting into first now is very difficult, it needs even more throttle then before and I have to leave the clutch half released to get it moving or else it just stalls.
This really fucking sucks, I was up til 5am reading the manuals that Donsy posted trying to learn everything I can. My next idea is to replace the fuel filter, spark plugs and air filter. I did all of my own work on my 748 so I feel pretty comfortable with just about anything, except the engine. I appreciate you guys giving me advice, my last year of college just started and I can't afford to take it 150 miles to the MV Dealer.

Just talked to an mv mechanic, he is on my level of what needs to be replaced, fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, change the oil, all of which I can do myself. If that doesn't work than I'll take it to them and go from there. He said the ticking noise could be the cam chain tensioner but he can't be sure until he sees it. I feel a lot better after talking to him, my stress levels have definitely gone down.

Thanks guys! I have ordered the plugs, oil filter and oil. For now I'm going to wait and see what happens when I replace all of this. If it is a vacuum leak, what do I need to do to fix this? Also, as I was leaving the house today, I noticed a little bit of oil under the bike, what could cause this?

Reading thru... Did you pull the plugs to see if any were fouled out or not the same color as the rest of the plugs?

Re the oil... Did you have a 1970s Harley visit your place last night?

I'd be giving this bike a full service and I would be very curious about the ignition coils....I reckon you have a misfire due to coil breakdown possibly triggered when the bike got overheated....Maybe ..It';s difficult to diagnose at a distance..but my £ is in a breakdown in one of the coils.
