Hi,

I am looking at buying my first MV and have found 2 of interest but not sure which is best to go for so thought I would check with the experts on the matter.

I have seen a 2000 750 F4 with 7200 miles but does not come with service history. I have been told it has been serviced but there is no proof. It seems reasonably tidy apart from the lacquer seems to have cracked in a couple of places on the side fairings and the bellpan is a different shade (not sure why this would be).

The second one I have spotted (not been to see yet, going this Sunday) is a 2002 750 F4 with around 5000 miles on it. It is described as excellent condition and has FSH but is a lot more expensive (around £6500 rather than £4500).

Really I just wanted to check if firstly, FSH is essential on MVs and secondly if the 2002 is that much better than the 2000 model.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Either bike will be okay with or without history as long as they have dual radiators which was a later re-call to prevent overheating problems.

I would go on the feel & look of the deal & does the mileage tally with the bikes condition?

It is possible the discolouration on the panels is due to heat damage from the exhausts or a respray from it dropping of the retractable stand. I would ask the owner to remove the side panels for a look underneath to be sure, it takes literally seconds with the dzus fasteners.

These bikes tend to spend long periods laid up so check for rust in the tank & cracked tyres etc. Service wise just oil & plugs are required & general adjustments.

I have serviced my own bike for the last 7 years & done 15k & the valve clearances have never needed touching & my bike would come with NO service history as I have done all my own, which I know is better than any dealer could have done!:naughty:

Just ask the guy some maintenance questions & if he really does not know a thing or can not even adjust a chain etc then maybe I would walk away if it does not feel right!

Thanks bungle, I will see what the other bike looks like on Sunday I guess and take on board what you have said.

Hi and welcome. First, it's a buyers market, you might get either bike a fair bit cheaper than the asking price, second if the 2002 bike is an Evo II model its definitely a better prospect than the earlier bike even if it is more expensive. Evo engined F4 750's have more power and other upgrades over the originals.

Thanks John,

How can I tell if it is an EVO 2 model? I asked the guy but he does not know. Will it say it on the V5?

It should have a sticker on the tail underneath F4 that says Ev 02. Failing that it would say on its original bill of sale or in the service book.
I have just been in the very position that your in now, in terms of buying a 740 F4 and had a very similar quandry! It seems as though there is no real way to quickly tell. I got a 2004 EV03 and it has the sticker on the tail and all of my history says EV03 including the original receipts for service work at the dealer etc. You might find that its a MY01 bike so none evo, that was registered in 2002...

PS there is an EV03 just been relisted on ebay that looks really nice. I asked the guy what he wanted for it and it was £6850 but he might be open to offers you never know..
I havent seen the bike though so have no idea if its nice in the flesh

I also know of a 2000 model with a lot of money spent on it, Power commander, carbon everything, Gilles rearsets, arrow exhausts etc etc. Its £4500 (he might take offers) and is clean and well serviced (he is a mechanic at my local MV dealership) its done 20k though..

I have a EVO2 but the stickers that should be on the tail are still in the owners manual with the instructions on where to put them. This could be the case with other EVO2 bikes. I'll check for other ID references and get back.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will take a look when I go see it then, see if I can spot anything in the paperwork.

The one I was looking at is on PistonHeads - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2982788.htm. It doesn't have the stickers on the tail but it may be like Farmhand's I guess.

Messer - I spotted that EVO3 has been relisted, got it on watch again but think it is a little of my budget, I guess we'll see. The 2000 model sounds nice but I am looking for a low mileage one ideally.
