MV and service

Hello,

I would like to get some input from MV owners that are unlucky to not live close to an MV dealership (if they even exist - the owners I mean).

I am currently thinking of getting an 05 or 06 MV F4 just because I still like the color scheme and the wheels much better than the newer models (getting it cheaper is of course a side argument as well ;) ). However, my problem is simply that no matter whether I look North or South, I end up with having the closest dealership a straight six hours drive away.

Despite that God did not suited me with more than two left hands (which actually count at least for ten left ones), I do not want to perform any service on my own while the bike is still under warranty (for obvious reasons). On the other side...getting it serviced would be a full three day adventure (two days worth of travelling, one day service) which is kind of hard to justify for me.

So...what do other MV owners do facing the same challenge? Doing the service on their own and not caring about the warranty? Take the three day service adventure tour? Ship the bike?

I would really appreciate any input since I already stare at the picture of the MV more than several hours a day...

Thank you very much.

There is no MV dealer where I live but there is mechanic that will service MV's (and Ducati's). As there is no dealer in our state the importer is happy for us to use then and talk to the mechanic about what is needed for the service. We know the mechanic really well as he is in the Ducati club so I know he does a good job and can trust him.

Maybe you can talk to the importer about doing a deal like this if you know of someone who you trust to do it for you.

Deborah,

Thank you very much for your input. Let me state though that I am pretty much new to the US (moved here from Germany last November) thus, I do not happen to know any MV mechanic (nor any other mechanic). We have a Ducati dealership in town which is thinking of getting MV's but not in the near future. Whether their mechanic would be able to do a MV I cannot tell either.

Furthermore, I think I perfectly fulfill the image of a blonde, stupid German since I honestly do not know anything about any importers. I mean, I know what importers are however, have absolutely no clue how the whole thing works with MV (pretty much the simple question: How does an MV gets from Italy to the States?).

Thanks again for your input.

I was in a similar situation early this decade but not as bad as your. I was two hours away from the dealer with only a Ducati dealer to do the service. At the time it was mostly experiementation. But, I think you have two options:

1) Rent a Uhaul motorcycle trailer or a pickup truck for Enterprise and take your bike to the dealer for the services or warranty work.

2) Get a shop manual and have your Ducati dealer do the work. Cagiva will most likely not cover it under warranty. (Been there and tried that).

Of course you or your dealer can do the minor services (oil & inspection) and let your MV dealer do the first (600 miles) service and then the major service (valve inspection at 7,500 miles).

Allan,

Thank you very much. I agree, two hours sounds like a dream to me...if anybody knows any MV dealership that is closer to Kentucky than Illinois or Georgia and is not listed yet at the MV website please let me know.

You pretty much stated what I already was thinking about. Getting the major services done by an MV dealership (most-likely not the one where I buy it) and do oil services by my own (I have a co-worker who does this on his Yamaha so at least he could help me). I do not own a truck myself however, getting one and driving the bike up there would be one possibility (although a painful one). But I guess, maintaining such a beauty is just like maintaining a woman...you need to suffer from time to time to maintain the joy and passion they give you... ;)

What is the typical oil and inspection interval though? And do you happen to know whether Ducati will cover it under warranty? Or is that something I need to discuss with the dealer?

Reading all the excitement here from people driving the MV does not make we want to wait until we get a local dealership...which may not even happen...

Thanks again.
