De-catting B4

2013 1090RR - what is involved in de-catting the bike? Is anyone making a cat-eliminator pipe and will running the bike without a cat require re-mapping? Would like to loose the cat but will have the belly pan to keep modification hidden from LEO's prying eyes...

The headers are in one piece so there is no separate decat pipe available. I guess you could have custom exhaust shop cut it out and weld one in...but its not cost effective as you can buy headers for £400

Yes it needs mapping and you will get error messages due to the exhaust servo removal

You can get a "healtech exhaust eliminator" that plugs in and supresses the error message. Then you have to map the bike

Fuelers available are limited, I think Rapid bike is one option or the official Race ECU...which is expensive, for what is a generic map and likely you still end up having to adjust it with a fueler after.

I have fitted headers and the MV race ecu and it still needs adjustment...hopefully my MV dealer can do it....thats work in progress

In hindsight could have gone with standard ECU + rapid bike using the lambda + healtech to lose the servo error.

Bogie, thanks for your detailed input. Sounds like a lot of effort. I was kind of hoping that it would be a much more straightforward modification. Would be worth it if I was looking to round up all the performance possible from the engine but I'm ok with stock performance and even sound. Brutale is used for street riding, as such reliability and rideability is key factor.

Yeah, it is a lot of effort due to the lack of tuning options from the aftermarket. No-one can map the factory ECU as far as Im aware ....

I have had my bike just over 3 years and just got around to doing the headers because I wanted titanium for the look, otherwise I was very happy with performance and sound (had OL4 exhaust already)

Now im committed so want to get it running as good as possible...back to the dealer for more adjustment :)

I purchased evolutionbike.it race ECU to use in combination with a complete HP Corse exhaust platform on my 990R ...brilliant...not cheap. I purchased the exhaust from the forum and it worked ok without the ECU...it was a little snatchy at times but it worked. I rode for about 6months with that combination before getting the ECU.

?

Tirefriar;
Where are you in SoCal? I've NEVER been bothered about loud pipes
Worst offender probably my '62 Abarth 1000 twin cam with an FIA racing exhaust
No one ever said anything about my '04 Aprilia RSVR with the Ti race cans either and it sets every car alarm off
Present offender 910R with Arrow Thunder WITHOUT the dB Killer sets a few alarms off
Even my R1150GS is loud!

I'd get an Arrow Thunder system and lose ~20 pounds.......cutting the CAT off my '08 910R didn't work
the head pipe ends weren't straight

I have 2 sets of 1st Gen Brutale non welded head pipes I'll sell, you can have the welded ones to play with for free
fabrication skills required
NB I don't know if 1st Gen Brutale pipes will fit 2nd Gen......anyone?
:wink2:

Bugger ...if only I was in SoCal mate, we could experiment a lot more with the Gen1 and Gen2 interchanges. I've always be a bit weary about buying a set of Gen 1 headers. However, I've now got a complete set so might get a chance to test the fit on my new 1090RR....

Noel,

I am right off Topanga Canyon. Loud pipes are not an issue, although i did wake up the neighbors when starting an SB8R with Arrow exhaust on Sunday mornings. I am more bothered by the heat coming off the cat.

With Beemers, de-catting the bike is relatively simple. On an '04 Boxer Cup, or any R11S for that matter, the modification required the replacing the cat with a cat-delete pipe. Simple mod that cost no more than few hundred bucks.

I appreciate the kind offer, but I am concerned about proper re-mapping and the costs associated with it. If I was going to do a large ticket item, my first choice would be suspension upgrade.

On the earlier (maybe pre 2012) Brutale models the header and link pipe were separate so much easier to decat without the expense of new headers.

After some experimentation, below the solution I found for decat on later B4 models with the 5SM ECU:

New headers - arrow (stainless steel)£550 or Silmoto (titanium) £900
Rapidbike EVO tuner - £375
Healtec Exhaust Servo Eliminator - £40
BMC air filter - £70
Mapping - £150

The Rapidbike tuner retains and utilises the stock lambda sensor, and you can fine tune the map after riding a few hundred miles, it will suggest any adjustments.

With this setup my bike is up 13bhp at the wheel compared to standard headers and slip ons, and lost 10kg of weight. I didn't really do it for the power gain though, I just really liked the titanium header look compared to the stock header/cat that was corroding.

I did try the MV "race" ECU, which is really the same MM 5SM ECU as you already have on the bike, its just programmed with a generic map for a full exhaust system. It does not use the lambda sensor and switches off the exhaust valve servo (so you can remove all the motor/cable)

With this "race ECU" setup, the bike ran just fine, albeit a bit rich on my bike. Its a generic map and for a "plug and play" swap over solution included with the "MV race exhaust" kit then It may be "near enough" on some bikes. My bike gained 6bhp with that setup.

Here is a picture of the 2010 Brutale 1090RR header and cat box....all welded one-piece.

Perhaps the pre-2010 models had the multi-piece headers.

@bogie did the Rapidbike setup let you tune the entire A/F range? I was under the impression from previous threads that the stock ECU and aftermarket tuners only provided tuning beyond 10-15% throttle. I believe the Mictrotec setup was the only way to get around it. I'll do some digging and see if I can find the thread.

I'm a little bit surprised that vendors have not started to heavily discount their B4 aftermarket exhausts. Especially now with the announcement of a new 1000cc engine on the way. It's getting more and more uncommon to see people joining with a new/used B4 it seems.

Edit: I found the thread that has more info on what the different tuners are capable of tuning. It looks like the Rapid Bikes was not able to tune the ignition, not sure if this is still the case.

Either way, this is a good thread for anyone that is looking at an exhaust modification and tuning:

Yes you can tune all the range on the Rapidbike. Microtec dont support bikes with ABS so there is no fitment for my Brutale, other than Rexxer, Rapidbike are one of the few aftermarket tuning gizmos I could find supporting the later 1090

Rapidbike do various models with different feature levels "easy" "evo" "race". Easy is basic fuel module like a power commander. I have the "EVO" which allows various extras to be added and auto-tune from the lambda. The "Race" version offers track specific features including ignition mapping, pit limiter, launch control etc

they are rubber insert inside the airbox, you have to remove the tank first to get to the airbox.

if you are fitting a tuner/new ECU and have the tank off, may as well fit a high flow filter and remove snorkels whilst you are in there.....

Not sure about the effect on power, but it sure makes it sound faster with more induction roar :)

The ECU was tuned using Rexxer Platinum by Alientech.

The dyno guy also widened the rev band to what MV claimed in their data sheet.
I think all B4 RR hit the rev limiter much earlier than what MV says.

Here is a comparison of both rev stages:
