In actual fact( something you are very loose with)

Australia has 172 people per 100,00 of population in jail.
New Zealand has 214 people per 100,000 of population in jail.

So in reality you are living in a country of criminals far worse than the convict nation.

Regarding the use of jails.
It probably costs more in the short term, but in the longer term you eventually discourage people from offending and then you need less money for both policing and incarceration.
Win/Win

Or you could utilize the death penalty for a lot of more minor offences like break and enter or theft.

This way you would get very few repeat offenders and not have to worry about what comes out of the jails.

Now that would be a big WIN!!!
Australia exports criminals to NZ, any Kiwis miss behaving, or even associating with gangs in Australia get sent back to NZ, even if they have been there since they were a baby, some have been in Aus for 40 years but sent back here. We don't send jailed or bad Aussies back home, we rehabilitate them Our prison population is currently around 7500 thats from a population of 4.4 million

What a load of shit Dave.

You don't send Aussies home because none of them want to live over there with you lot of sheep shaggers, so they don't move over there.

Unlike the thousands of Kiwis who are desperate to move to the vastly better country that is Australia!!!!!

Don't quote total prison population as any sort of indicator, the only comparable number is per capita. IE: people per 100,000 of population

I don't see New Zealand in the above chart although Australia is right there (OK, below Wales and England).

Actually theres more Aussies moving to NZ than vice versa, with your economy doing poorly its been reverse immigration from the last 3 years, do some research. What was the US 735 per 100,000, thats getting close to 1%. Our prison population has dropped from 8500 to 7500 over the last 3 years. How many people you got locked up on Naru, and other detention centres.? add that to your prison population.

For the rest of you that are still trying to win an argument with a idiot. The ignore list is rather nice and you will feel better for it.

Hi Andrew,

Don't assume everyone who engages with Dave is trying to win the argument.

Some of us are just taking the piss!!!

And waiting to see how long he takes to work it out, even with this comment he may still struggle to get it.

Hi Harvey,

Read my comment, it refers to per capita not total figures.

The following taken from a site called prisonstudies.org

On per capita:

United Kingdom - 139 people per 100,000
Australia - 169 people per 100,000
New Zealand - 203 - per 100,000

If you care to read back you will see the original topic was about throwing people in jail, and i referred that the US already has the largest prisoned population in the world, then NZ and Australia were thrown in, not sure why as we are less than a third the US prison population rate of 737/100,000, thats more than 3 times NZ prison population rate of 204/100,000. and Australia's 175/100,000.

If you would care to read back David,

you will find that you quoted my comments and then stated that "your country" (referring to me) had the highest prison population.

If you put the crack pipe down for a minute you would notice that my location is central Queensland(QLD). This is a state in Australia. Hence the reference to Australian and New Zealand prison rates.

If you can't accept that you live in a gang and criminal filled country, then you should not go on a rant about other countries!!!! or you could just piss off from this forum.
