Ilmor out of Moto GP

http://www.crash.net/news_view~cid~6~id~144548.htm

Thought they might last abit longer than one race !!!

MV should take note Moto Gp is a different ball game than Superbikes

Moto Gp will be out reach for MV for a long time.

Wall Street is the only place that people ride to in a Rolls Royce to get advice from those who take the subway.

This is sad news.

I could make a few cracks about Eskil Suter's Moto GP record or Mario Illiens comment about "underestimating the difficulty of securing backing".

But it's too serious really. Moto GP, like F1 needs independant teams (not aligned with major manufacturers) to act as feeder squads for rider and engineer development and to fill out the grid. Sometimes innovation comes from a smaller squad, you wouldn't want them all to be riding HRC customer bikes, would you?

Kenny Roberts is threatening to quit by mid-season if he can't secure additional sponsorship. This may be posturing to get Dorna to share more of the revenue, but it would really be sad if KR quits.

Yeah, i thought Ilmor had more funding in place before they started but it doesn't look like that is the case. The little guys are really getting pushed out which makes for smaller grids. If Roberts is having a hard time how is a start-up going to find and secure sponsorship.

On another note I was just reading the past issue of roadracingworld and it looks like the Motocysz is likely headed to world superbike instead of motogp. looks like another sauber/petronas (foggy) bike scenerio.

I believe he would have done if he had been anywhere near the pace of the rest, I'm probably being a little brutal here, whilst also applauding Ilmors effort, he has probably done the correct thing as they were way off with a bike intent on hurting the rider, hopefully he will go away and do some proper testing without the race weekend pressure, get closer to the pace and return, people like Ilmor don't normally have huge sponser problems as they are well tied to all the manufactureres that they do business with

MV's all gone now, still have a soft spot for MV's, waiting for MV to tick all my boxes again.

I think you are right, we haven't seen the last of Illmor. It is clear they need a lot more testing to get closer to the grid and I suspect it is a bit cheaper to test in private than with the GP teams. I hope to see them back.

It's a lot to do with the pressure of a race weekend as well, on a test day there's no scruiteneering, crowds, sponsers, just you, the track, and a pile of stuff to do/try, I used to love test days you could just get on with the job in hand, I often wished I could just do the Friday test, Saturday qualifying then just say and go home
