January 1, 2007 - Ride Report

The morning of New Year's Day has always been a favorite day of mine for an early morning ride. With most of humanity hung over sleeping in bed, the roads are typically desolate, this morning was no exception. I had arranged to meet our friend Mick in Anaheim hills, and he stated last night that he'd be onboard his V-twin 2003 Honda Super Hawk 996, so I figured I would get the old 95 VFR750 out for a New Year's shakedown with it's cousin.

The VFR felt heavy by comparison as I levered it off of the track stand, but that effort is repaid in stability. I left Corona on the CA15 north to the CA91 west, for the 20 minute cruise to the Starbucks to meet my friend. After the past two days of R1 and F4 ripping, it felt nice to sit straight-up and have use of mirrors that actually work! Although mine is a 1995 model, it still runs great, has a very balanced and capable suspension, and a broad, usuable torque curve. I blasted along effortlessly en route to the coffee shop, enjoying the crisp morning air, the deserted freeway, and the howl of the V-four and it's whining gear-driven cams.

I caught up with Mick and we immediately set sail for the curves. We headed south on Imperial Highway to Santiago Canyon, a twisty and undulating back road that leads up to the world famous Cook's Corner, a notorious Harley stop. There was virtually no traffic, and the two Hondas made their way briskly through the canyons. We rode right past Cook's, and the made the left onto Marguerita Parkway, winding our way south through the empty town of Lake Forest, bound for the western entrance to Ortega Highway, CA74. After clearing the neighborhood near the bottom, we picked up the pace to a brisk sport-touring clip, winding back and forth through the flat twisties leading up to the Ortega Mountain range. We passed only two cars in the flats and began our ascent of the western side.

The road was shadowy and cold in the corners, but the Hondas did a great job of displacing the turns. We climbed to the summit of a hauntingly quiet expanse of mountain road, stretching the legs of the bikes as the tires came to life.

We stopped at the Cliff House to stretch out, and there was only five or six other bikes there. We snapped some quick pictures of the bikes and the fogged in Lake Elsinore below us, and remounted. The trip down the eastern ridge was as deserted as the rest of our trek, and we made great time getting down the hill.

After devouring way too much food at Tom's Farms, we headed back up the winding frontage road north along the CA15. With the Supercross season only days away from it's Anaheim opener, I was curious to see if there was any activity at the Pro Circuit Kawasaki test track that is nestled alongside of the 15. I am fortunate to live within 5 miles of the Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki test tracks, and frequent these spots to check in on practice. This morning, the Team Motosport Kawasaki boys were ripping up the Pro Circuit track, and we stopped and watched Kawasaki Supercross Lites riders Steve Boniface and Matt Boni chase each other around the track on their KX250fs. They were flying.

After a few pics it was time to head home to let the dog out, so we hopped on the freeway for a short blast north to my exit.

The bikes are parked, Mick has collapsed on the couch, and I am here to share this thread with you guys.

It was a wonderful ride, just over 125 miles total, and I encourage each of you to forgo a night of partying one year, and take advantage of a deserted world on New Year's Day.

Great pics, great story. I really enjoy your stories...due to family commitments today, I just couldn't take a ride myself, but ALMOST feel like I did after reading about your day -- THANK YOU!

you are the luckiest man alive to be living there right in the heart of those supercross tracks, i would love to see those tracks one day

Ha ha! Unfortunately, the Duc hunting was poor. Saw two of them, a Xerox and a 999R resting at the Cliff House, didn't find any in flight! Although Mick's Super Hawk is a capable machine, I prefer Duc hunting on the MV vs. the VFR!!!
