August 21, 2006 - Highway 9, 236, and the Redwood Forest

Thought I would start off with the solo ride I went on today into the Santa Cruz mountains. Thought I would swing by the Big Basin Redwoods State Park (http://www.bigbasin.org/) deep in the heart of the Santa Cruz mountains.

I use the DeLorme Bluetooth GPS receiver ( http://www.delorme.com/ ) that will log the route that can later be displayed in the gps software. It supports a number of files (GPL, AN1, TXT) for the log of coordinates. Fun thing is that it will log date/time/latitude/longitude/elevation/heading/speed wihch can be displayed nicely later in the program. It also can be connected to my treo, which runs Tom Tom. I've yet to buy a good mount for the motorcycle to mount my Treo, but it's convenient to know during a stop where I'm at.

Below is the route:

One way is about ~25 miles. Starting from highway 9 & 236 intersection, it becomes a 1 lane road which is filled with a lot of tight turns. Not to be taken at speed. Elevation change is about 2300 ft from base of the mountain to the top.

P.S. You could probably fit a car into that hollow redwood! It's quite large.
