Fresh off the mill!

After a lowside last season (and having sold my last one) I needed a new ignition side case cover. By all accounts the last batch held up better than expected but I wanted to improve. So I went back to the drawing board and set out to improve my case covers. What I have here is the test piece that was used to determine machining parameters for the final part. This was milled from 6061, but the final piece will be 7075 as before. What has changed? Weight for one. I have reduced the weight by 25% from my first generation and am now only 24 grams over the stock case covers. The skid plate is thicker and the cover more robust over all. The cover is fresh off the mill with nothing else done to it. Machining time is ridiculous with the amount of surfacing required.[/IMG][IMG]

Very nice.....Might like to have that for my track bike (one of these days I will actually take it to a track and ride it!!!).
How about just anodized grey to match the cases?

I used to be fast....now I just dream about it.

I actually didn't make these with the intent to sell them. Commercially they aren't really feasible since they actually take quite a while to machine. The intent was really to make a couple for me, without regard to cost or manufacturing. I ordered enough material for 10 covers so I suppose I can run off a batch I will most likely have some plated or anodized to match my needs since the cost is the same between one and a small number. Multiple colors would be out of the question though. I could leave some bare though if someone wanted to anodize their own or just wanted bright silver color.

Hopefully if you get enough interest off the forum guys to cover your time and costs, them maybe it might be worth considering doing a small one off production run..

You might like this Ed:

This is after about 12 hours in the tumbler. The matte finish is an almost dead on match for the cases!

That looks nice,

When you say 'Machining time is ridiculous', how many hours ?
Out of interest, what machine are you using ?

Cheers

We are looking about 1hr per side run time. Machine is a CNC mill I made based on a converted Comet Knee mill. The contouring is what takes so much time 800mm./min feed is about all I can puch with light cuts before I start snapping carbide.
