1078RR air box mod, yes or no?

Hey guys!

Still very happy with the Brutale 1078RR
First thing to do is having the valves checked and if needed adjusted. After that i will have the ecu mapped on a dyno by a Ducati specialist who are known and very good at tuning. He wants to make an appointment to see if he can read and write the (stock) ecu and if it's possible i'll be happy

But i have read about the air box mod, what is nothing more than removing the 2 snorkels. But there doesn't seem to be a clear answer to if it is harmful or not or if the bike is affected in a good or a bad way. Want to sort that out before having it remapped on the dyno

Thanks and cheers!

Dutchmv,

I just fitted a BMC filter to mine. Can't see the snorkels adding much restriction to air flow. If it can be dyno tuned, and I'm not sure the standard ecu can although other members can answer that better than me, then that should take into account snorkel or no snorkel. I run a Microtec ecu from Chris at XBikes that I would recommend. This is definitely tuneable and will give you far more improvement in a lot of areas than removing the snokels.

Cheers

Ok, i would just do it for the noise. It has already been on a dyno and it was pretty rich at the top rev range. Don't know if the ecu can compensate where the lambda is active tho. There is a company here in the netherlands that does flash the stock ecu (also the 1090, 675 and 800 etc) but those are base maps that should work with every bike. There you can have different options - depends on the amount of mods you have done like exhaust, filter etc. The ducati specialist said that he can write almost every magneti marelli so he was pretty confident in that it will work. He did some Aprilia's and Moto Morini's as well but we'll see.

But what it's about for me is that removing the snorkels will not affect the bike in a negative way, except for the sound ?

So as the tank was empty i thought ok, i'll try it right away.

First impression : way more roar from under the tank, awesome! Also seemed smoother from closed throttle to a little throttle, so in manouvring situations in city's, taking corners under 30kph for example. It also looked like the coolant temp was lower by somewhere around 3-5 degrees and bike felt stronger from 3000-4000rpm, especially half throttle acceleration seemed better. Also hit the rev limiter like 4 times during this little ride what i never have. If it gets more air that could be possible as it runs rich in the upper rev area.

Noticed one downside and that was that in city speeds it was way more stuttering than with the snorkels in. I suspect that might be because the bike will run leaner in the area where it already is too lean. So i pop them back in, and when it goes on the dyno i will do a run with and without the snorkels.
