Anyone have instructions for installing a rear hugger?

I'm especially interested in the part where you drill the swingarm. I'm a little sketchy about that and want to take a look at the install instructions before I go with the SP part instead of the "no drill" combined hugger/chain guard.

Does the swingarm need to come off the bike, etc?
Thanks.

I bought and had the Special Parts rear hugger fitted to my SPR. Fantastic quality but was surprised that it required drilling. Its a wheel off job. I got lucky and being mates with the ex-parts manager at the local MV dealer had them fit it for free while I waited. That way if the installation was stuffed up I could always go down the path of demanding that they supply a new swing arm.

Knowing the drilling requirements, I'd still go the SP hugger, its stunning. If you want pics let me know and I'll take some.

If you do go the SP hugger my advice is to do it through your local dealer and when you order it ask for a 'fitted' price. They might not know of the drilling requirements and you can then get it fitted for free....

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to take your advice and have the dealer do it. I'm sure I could, but I'd rather them be responsible for screwing up the swingarm.

Very interesting... By drilling do you mean the actual flat mounting holes? If so do they give you self tapping screws for the job or do you need to tap the holes as well? I'm going to check out the rear hugger thats on my F4S and see if that was drilled on, or is it a bike / year specific requirement?

I would much rather have a "lesser quality" hugger, than have to tap and drill my swingarm...F that mess, I don't care if Jesus made it...it's a hugger, it's designed to get dirty...and nobody really looks at it....

I put a SP hugger on my bike. Drilled the swingarm with too. It's actually significantly easier to fit than you would think. I put the bike on the stand, removed the wheel, set the hugger in place and marked the centers of the 3 holes that need to bedrilled with a "white out" pen. It left a small white dot at the center of the hole to be drilled. I bought a set of titanium bits to drill with. I figured that if I was going to do this, I should at least use fresh bits. Then I drilled at the marks using progressively larger bits. I purchased a 90 degree offset chuck at Home Depot for use in my drill to get the 3rd hole positioned correctly.

There are only a couple of things you really need to pay attention too:

1st: Removal of the rear wheel nut the first time is a cast iron bitch!
2nd: Check the alignement of the holes with the hugger 3 times. You just hold it in place and mark the centers. Done.
3rd: Center puch the holes to get a point for the drill bit to rest.
4th Drill.
5th: Drill
6th" Drill
7th: Drill
8th: Place wellnuts in holes, set hugger, tighten fasteners.
9th: Reassemble rear wheel.
10th: Drink beer. Admire your work.

Easier than you think, honest!

Got questions? PM me.

I installed my MVSP rear hugger as well. Very easy to do, just take your time and like BDMF said, check your alignment and marks numerous times as you drill the holes bigger and bigger. The end result is three 3/8" holes that well nuts slip into.
