Question MV Corse Lithium Battery

I'm about to drop the cash on one of these:

They refer to it as a LIPO, does that category include the Lithium iron batteries (from what I understand - the safe type), or is it the type of lithium batteries that goes up in flames if incorrectly charged?

Also, is this one of those batteries that doesn't like being plugged into the trickle charger all the time? I ride maybe 2-3 times a month, so until now it's plugged into the tender almost all the time. The only thing different my bike has is a Xenon light.

Lastly, is it worth the money and how difficult is it to install? Will I loose any information (fuel maps) etc. once I disconnect the battery?

Honestly there are much better batteries out than that one if you want to go lithium. I personally like the ones the GP racing sells. They perform very well. With most lithium batteries you need to purchase their specific charger. The one for the Full Spectrum batteries is $50 where alot of the other brands are $80+.

Going to a Lithium battery and it's specific design's and constructions (of which there are many), open's a whole different can of worms.

Do your background research before you buy, there's quite a few different threads on this topic on the forum in the Maintenance section. Shorai is Chinese manufactured and have come a long way with quality control, there is USA manufactured Ballistic which I use as a jumper battery - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0QGNZwir4U I got mine from Motovation USA with the charger which also works on the Shorai,
and http://shop.antigravitybatteries.com/ also Racing which I use as well http://www.racingbatteries.co.uk/ and got from Design Corse, then http://www.fullspectrumpower.com/ which I think Alex at GP racing sells.

There's more, but basically you break them down into 3 categories.

1. Type of Lithium Cell construction, there is more than one, and this makes big difference in safety and strength, it's still a developing science and obviously some companies have been at it for some time.

2. Construction, and is again in divided into three groups a. Lithium cells wired in a case, can be charged with bike alternator or car battery, but not with a regular charger which has de-sulphonating mode. These are the cheapest.
b. Lithium cells built and wired into a case, but cells also wired to an additional port allowing for a periodical balancing charge of individual cells using an specific external charge. This is most common option.

c. Lithium cells wired into a case with an internally constructed balancing charge and balance system. These are often the most expensive, but cost the same as buying a Lithium battery with optional charger.

3. Case construction, thin heat shrink wrap is not the best, these batteries are high and low temp sensitive. Batteries in a hard case is much more temp stable.

And remember, as many members have found out, these thing have a completely different starting characteristic to lead acid units.

Did some digging, looks like the MV battery is from SHIDO

Anybody know the company? Their office is in Belgium.

It is the Lithium iron type of battery and apparently can be used by a traditional battery charger provided it doesn't do the high voltage de sulphating thing - need to check if the battery tender that comes with the F3 does that?

Also need to find out what a Top Charge means exactly (they refer to it in the QA) Will a normal battery tender be able to do that?

I have got a Shido battery and it is great.

I have got a CTEK charger but have used it on an Oximiser as well and it hasn't hampered performance.

I recently installed an Anti Gravity Lithium iron battery in one of my choppers and previously had a Earth X in an S4R. (2lbs) Seems to work great and they are very powerful. I think the key here is that my battery is a Lithium iron battery vs a lithium-cobalt oxide battery. The latter being found on laptops etc...and very sensitive with overheating problems and subsequent fire risk. Below is a link to an interesting explanation.

So far though they have been very reliable batteries...although a bit costly. They charge pretty quickly also.

Very important to get this part right, it's a Lithium Iron, Lithium Ion or a Lithium Iron Phosphate ? LiFe or LiFePO4
