Mastic or Gasket Sealer?

Replacing the seal on the timing cover. Engine manual (thanks firedancer and donsy) says to apply mastic for gaskets. What's the difference between mastic and something like Permatex gasket sealer?

use the Permatex.....I use the orange High Temp, a VERY light coat....
old race wrench trick.....when you open the cases you can see every spec of sealer
