Opening up used oil filter & oil analysis

Anyone cut open their oil filters after changing it out and inspected it?

I borrowed a pipe cutter from a neighbor and opened up my filter after recently swapping it out. I didn't find anything notable in the folds of the paper filter, but I'm not sure i wouls know exactly what to look for. I understand this is a good way to keep an eye on the state of the engine, but can one actually see particles or metal flecks or anything this way?

The magnet on the oil drain plug was also clean but I guess this too would have some telltale signs of engine wear. But, what exactly should one be on the lookout for?

Finally, supposedly the best thing to do is an analysis of the old oil, although can be a little costly. I suspect this will allow one to see what metals are in the oil and this can give some indication as to what may be wearing in the engine.

How many of you have inspected your oil filters and/or oil? What do you look for and what should one be watching out for?
