I just got a F4 EV03 with mileage around 10500km total. Have ridden it for 40 km from the seller’s place to my home, sweet and exciting ride, nothing happens. However when I took a look at oil level it seemed too low. There are few dried stains on engine and fairing, are they indications of a leak?At the moment I tried to top up the oil level but the oil filter cap was stuck.... any ideas to loosen it?
Did you give the oil time to settle again? It is not uncommon to not see much oil in the sight glass when it is running or has just run.
The early 750s were not made that well mate.
In your first pic the marks around the sight glass look like marks where the side fairing rubs on it.
The second picture is hard to tell, but if it isn't fresh oil I would suggest it didn't leak on your way home. It could just be crud from a bike that hasn't been looked after.
The picture of the fairing looks more like some joker has tried to glue/silicon mesh inside the fairing cut outs which was common for people to do at the time.
I suggest:
- let it sit for an hour and fill to 2/3rds the sight glass.
- Clean the entire engine bay area. Make sure you check around and clean the valve cover because often people don't put them back on properly and they leak, but more likely from the front
- start the bike and run it without riding for 10mins to look for any oil leaks. (do not ride it because the airflow of riding will move oil if it is leaking and make it harder to find the source.).
- If the valve cover has been off I would check the valve clearances, because they can be a PIA and people avoid doing them (because sometimes you need to remove the entire front end to do them) and will just put the cover back on. Hell, I would check them regardless because I'm OCD like that.
- You might consider some very gentle heat, then cold air treatment to break any bond the filler cap has. I would also try a better hex tool like a socket wrench version with a longer arm. Just make sure it is seated properly. I would also throw that piece of junk out and just get a stock one you finger tighten. People tend to overtighten with the ones you have fitted.
You do need to buy a rear stand to be able to do any kind of maintenance.... Where in the world are you? Some owners have the original stand that came with the bike and a better stand they purchased, and will happily provide the original stand ....but it is heavy and expensive to ship.
What Glenno said about cleaning everything up and looking for a leak before doing anything rash....valve covers typically leak on the left front corner (oil pools there when sitting on the side stand) but the oil will blow back from that point as the bike is ridden. Oil doesn't dry up....so look for the greasy spot. highest up on the frame/engine.
Hi Esq’z thanks for the input. I am in Hong Kong. Its true that without the rear stand its not possible to do almost everything.
The previous owner said he had reported oil leak to the dealer in April and they replaced a new engine head cover as a solution so all would be fine.
I will note down the points from you and Glenno and discuss with the dealer during service at the end of month. Just want to make sure there will be enough oil for a trip to the dealer for now.
I failed physics in high school so might not be the best person to give advice, but trust me. Get one of these, the longer the better. It'll pop right off next time. Better leverage
Luckily I cannot see fresh oil stains or on the ground and engine bay.
HOWEVER, I see there was no coolant in the coolant box, I tried to fill in distilled water, the box does not hold any and all of the water came STRAIGHT OUT underneath....I may have to have it towed to the dealer...
Do not run that bike until you have sorted the cooling! - Without a water/air-tight connection to the expansion tank you have NO idea of the coolant level --:surprise::surprise:
In the OP's post #10, looks like safety wire holding the expansion tank overflow hose on........wannabe racer didn't buy
a $12 pair of Clic-R pliers
My suspect, the hose from the bottom of the expansion tank to the left side water pipe or it's clamps
I eliminated the POS entirely and the lower radiator and heat exchanger too:grin2:
Expansion tank looks like they used radiator sealant on the cooling system too
Mine also has 2 radiators mate and it is a 2000. They were recalled to be retrofitted back in the day. I have not heard of any 750s breaking upper rads like the 1000s. Some of the more learned on here might shed some light, but my understanding is it is not a problem for the 750s.
Just to update. Got the bike back to dealer, yes it was the pipe as mentioned. They replaced 2 pipes and new coolant. But I discovered there are two non connected rubber pipes sticking out.....one was hanging freely near the gear shifter so I pulled it out, I cannot pull out the other, though their open ends are near the shifter, what are they?
The Fuel tank can come off easily. The coolant one shouldn't pull off from down low easily because of the way it is routed and the fitment onto the overflow bottle is firm.
