Bought a cheap 990 Brutale with issues. Opinions?

Hi,

I'm new to these bikes and didn't think maintenance or parts would be so difficult to come by. Should have done my research prior, but it was love at first site when I saw this bike. So my question is, when to give up on a bike and just take your loss and sell it? So, short story is I got this bike for $3700 cash, clean title, OEM keys, nothing too shady or anything. Owner told me it had a few issues so I thought maybe throw $500 into it and it will still be a bargain. So right now I'm in about $700 with parts and labor. New fork seals, replace handlebars, tail section, tail light, exhaust (was lucky to find OEM on ebay for $35). So cosmetically, it looks good now, but still a couple mechanical issues. First one is immobilizer. I have to enter the code about 3/4 of the time when attempting to start it. Dealer tells me I need to buy whole new dash. And the other is a stalling issue when pulling in clutch to start breaking (idles fine). I know everyone is different, but any opinions on what you would do here? I've had the bike 2 months now and have been able to ride it about 25 miles because it's been in repair shop getting all this work done and still have last 2 issues to resolve.

And sorry for novel here and if I'm even posting in right forum.

Thanks
Del

It’s a 2010 with 14k miles. May seem high miles to some, but I ride the hell out of my bikes (when they run) so putting another 15-20k on it doesn’t phase me.

14k isn't high at all with this bike, and properly maintained, should easily give you another 15-20k. Given that, MV's historically have not played well with alarms and have been the source of many problems. I would not give up if I were you. If I had an extra SPU laying around I'd lend it to you to test. Hopefully someone chimes in with better advice than mine

As a 2010, I'm going out on a limb here and saying it does not have a "SPU". In 2010 they went to the 5SM ECU and did away with the SPU.

There are a lot of electronics in this model, and most issues can be diagnosed with the correct software and connections.
If there have been some bad wiring alterations they will interfere with the canbus system, and will take some time to track down the cause of the issues.
Idle and stalling issues is commonly a throttle body balance adjustment.
Are you comfortable doing your own work?

The 2010 Brutale 990 is not a CANBUS bike.

Iridium spark plugs can help with the stalling issue.

I'm guessing the bike needs plugs, as Mitchy has said, it needs the TPS reset and would probably benefit from balancing the throttle bodies.

VDST software might yield info on the immobilizer as well.... But you would think the dealer would know that. I'm still betting on poor connection or maybe damage antennae.
