Engine 'click' when trying to start

Chaps

Early F4 750, 20K miles. I've had it about 4 years, ridden once at a charity track event but it stands looking pretty on a pedestal in my garage mostly.

I've been doing some cosmetic refurb work on it, replacing weathered fasteners etc and decided to run it up to temp to change the oil etc and all I got was a 'click' noise....... thing is, it sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine and the engine is trying to turn.

I'm wondering if something to do with the cam chain tensioner could be stopping the engine from turning and how I find out?

Advice greatly appreciated.

Dan

It's your battery.

I used to be fast....now I just dream about it.

Dan, there are many threads about this within this forum. It is probably a weak battery and corroded or loose electrical connections in the start circuit.

Charge or replace the battery...better yet, load test it.

Do not install the battery with reverse polarity....easy to do if you aren't paying attention.

What is the last thing done to the bike before this start attempt?

Do you keep the bike on a smart charger?

Ok, this concerns me.

Did you install the new battery wit the Negative (-) terminal toward the front of the bike?

Did you install ALL of the wires to the correct terminals?

Check your connections at the start solenoid.

This is a known issue with these bikes. Left side. Literally disconnect the wires, clean and reterm.

No joy...... removed and cleaned all the connectors, it's making an audible click but nothing.

They appear to be fairly cheap, so I'll order one unless I should be checking something else?

Cheers

Have you checked the voltage at your terminals and at the starter solenoid under load?

Please put your bike year and model in your signature as this help us help you without having to dig to figure out what bike is being diagnosed,.

Ok, please don't think I am doubting your capabilities; the number of people who have spent weeks of replacing parts and "diagnosing" issues only to find that "hey, there IS another wire there...maybe if I hook that up...." and bingo everything is good.

A reverse polarity situation, even for a nanosecond blows diodes in these bikes and then you have starting issues.

I am being particular about wiring here simply because it IS an issue that keeps cropping up. Burned out solenoids is NOT something that keeps cropping up.

Before I went out spending money, I would recheck my work and voltage test the system during the start sequence.
