Weird!

Ladies,

Found the attached today after cleaning the bike for the first time literally in 3 months. Jammed between the water pump hose and the crankcase. It's a nut off a crankcase stud, right side inlet. They (studs) look pretty long so I wondered how it had come out. Checked the depth of the hole and it's only 30mm so it appears the stud is still in there. However the nut is clear and threads intact. So if it came loose and jumped off how come the top 40mm or so snapped off the stud. Weird.

Bike runs fine and it could've been like this for a long time. I always blow out the right side nuts with air after a wash. They're easier to see than the left which I've never noticed. Check yours.

If I see any leaks it looks like a motor rebuild.

Cheers

Deano

that's scary, lets hope more don't let go. Is the head a clean break or can you see a dull area as if it had an early fracture?

Pretty awkward place to see into. I'll investigate with mirror and lights when I get the time and get back to you.

Cheers

Thumbs up ?

Deano;
Don't worry about unless the head is leaking......I'm not fixing mine
Upper stud found ~25,000mi
The much older broken stud found later, with no washer????
Head gasket doesn't leak.......fuck it
If you're lucky with a penetrant you might able to unscrew the stud, otherwise pull the head
In my case probably the cylinder too

Noel,

Thanks for that. Obviously not a one off then. Nothings leaking and it's running well so like you, fuck it, I'll leave it alone. Years ago an expert Norton mechanic told me you never touch the head on a Norton if it's not leaking so I'll use his advice and yours on the Brutale.

Cheers mate

Deano;
Never seen a broken cylinder stud before and I've been building motors for 50+ years
Both were outside rear studs??? the right one jumped up on a large bump in the road
and stuck against the head
The 2nd one i spotted because.the washer was missing???? go figure
I bought it with 4,200mi on it

As I said, a weird thing to break you'd think. Bought mine at 4500km. Expecting the other side to go now. Some engineer fucked up the metallurgy there for sure.

Cheers
