2002 F4 750 Senna - Fuel Pump Priming Issue

Hello All,

I wanted to wait and gather as much information as possible before I posted a help request after my new member introduction post.

My F4 750 Senna is having a fuel pump priming issue. The starter works fine and turns the engine over. The fuel pump is not priming when the ignition is Keyed On.

Ive gone through the F4 750 Workshop and the Electrical System manuals. Ive also researched quite a few message threads on the matter.

Ive checked the following:

1. Battery Voltage - 13.05V on Shorai Lithium Iron Battery.
2. Fuel Pump Fuse - Checks OK. Checked all other fuses for good measure. All OK.
3. Kill switch continuity - Checks OK.
4. Side stand switch continuity - Checks OK. Light shows on dash when active.
5. Neutral switch. Light shows on dash when Neutral is selected. Did not physically check continuity.
6. LATCH and GENERAL POWER relays - Both check ok. Gave 12V battery power to appropriate pins and checked continuity as per manuals. Swapped both sides for good measure. LATCH (left side) relay also Clicks OFF after 5 seconds when the ignition is Keyed Off.
7. FUEL PUMP - Checks OK. Gave 12V battery power to appropriate pins on the wiring harness and can hear a solid pump motor buzz.
8. Diodes - I may have to check this component again.
9. Engine Pick-Up sensor - Resistance value checks OK.
10. ECU - ?? - Worst case scenario, could it be an EPROM or ECU issue?

Thanks for any help on this issue.

Buzz, or did the pump spin?

Spin. Definitely a rotating electric motor sound. I even had the fuel pump flange assembly out of the tank and tested the pump. You could hear it and feel it (by touching the pump motor) work properly. Gave 12V power through the connector harness outside the flange. I believe that little connector harness is Ok.

[Side note]
I’ve checked voltage at the fuel pump / probe harness on the bike when the Ignition is Keyed On. Not sure what I’m getting is correct. I’m expecting 12V on Pins 1 and 2, for 3 seconds, but instead I’m getting -50mV when Key On, then +10mV when Key Off, then finally 0V when LATCH Relay Clicks Off. My understanding and expectation as to what should be happening could be way off.

It looks like ECU pin 23 controls the fuel pump signal.

There is another relay: The Injection Relay or the Power Relay

The relay that control the injectors and the fuel pump is the Injection Relay, also known as the Power Relay, part number 800090190, located as shown.

It is the same as the Latch Relay, so you should be able to swap them and see if that changes things.

The Power Relay is on the LEFT side, the Latch Relay is on the RIGHT side.

Done. #6 on my Checklist.

I suppose I could just replace both Relays with new ones and check.

The General Power Relay is a separate relay on the left side of the bike in the same holder as the Intermittency and the Start Solenoid.

Ok, thanks. I checked continuity on the General Power Relay. Cleaned contacts. Gave 12V battery power on the appropriate pins. General Power Relay Checks Ok. Also checked for 12V battery voltage on the appropriate pins on the harness to this relay. I do get battery voltage when Ignition is Keyed On. Currently 12.92V.

I also checked voltage at the harness to the Latch and Injection / Power relays.

Relays Checked Ok as mentioned earlier.

I took photos and videos to document the process. Mainly for my reference. But maybe it will help someone else in the diagnostic process

Will need to see how to check voltage from harness at ECU Pin 23. Positive lead from Multitester to Pin 23 on harness and Negative to ECU ground?

[Side Note - Observation]
When the problem initially started I had a full tank of fuel. Now I have the tank off the bike and it is empty of fuel. I do not see a low fuel light on the dash. Could a bad fuel probe cause the fuel pump to not activate?

I have not done the test on the probe described the manual involving attaching a light bulb to the connector.

Many thanks, silentservice703, for the help so far!
