Today I went for a ride with my F4 1078RR. In the middle of the ride the bike “died”. This already happened. But that was because I was ridding in the city and the gear I was using was to hight for my speed (this is not one Ducati). But a touch on the starter and everything solved. Today I was riding in 2nd gear and I was approaching the red signal. And the bike “died”. The problems was that the starter didn’t have the power to start the bike. Thank good I was near a road on a hill. So I started the bike in 3 gear. No problems. I went home and after lunch I decided to test the bike (last days I noticed that the bike had a strange behavior starting, like it was suffering, I had lucky because it’s well tuned and when the starter power is enough it starts right away at the first try). Everything fine. So I decide to give it a “temperature treatment” like you know to test the components to the limit you need to take then to the limit. So I did a ride in the city. The bike was always (stoped) 100 degrees but no problems (27 degrees and the traffic always stoped). Great response and behavior. I decide to stop the bike and test it again. The same, the starter has not power. But it started. So I decide to measure the battery. Everything was fine and the battery was charging. So if there is no problem with the bike, if all the components are working fine but the starter has no power I decide to replace the battery (it had 5 years and the bike was stopped 2 years). I bought a lithium Aliant ultralight battery. Tomorrow I will put it on the bike.
Do you think I made a good option?
Do you think the problem was the battery (the battery is receiving the right power from the bike)?
Thanks

Best Regards,
Luis Miguel

There is too much information missing for a remote diagnosis.

If the problem doesn't recur, then you mad the right decision.

The start solenoid connections should be inspected and cleaned also.

In my bike where is the start solenoid?
I hope I took the right decision. However I took the risk because it’s time to replace the battery. If the problem is still there I will check the start solenoid.
Thank you

Luis Miguel

Question

Before you go tearing into a very expensive and temperamental machine that might just kill you if you get it wrong, don't you think it would be wise to have the service manual handy?

You are right. But I have download 3 manuals and can not find that. Can you tell me what is the right one. And the one you post is for my bike (F4 1078RR). Thank you again.

Luis Miguel

The first manual in the F4 section of Donsy's website is the EDITION 4 and covers the 1000 S and R, The 312R, The AGO, The SENNA and the 1078RR

I have that. Sorry. I didn’t see it in the manual. But, like I told you, it’s time to replace the battery and it’s a upgrade, it’s lighter. The problem is that maybe the problem is the solenoid like you say. Let’s see. Tomorrow I’m going to replace the battery and test the bike. I will give feedback. Thanks a lot for the tips. You are top.

Best Regards,
Luis Miguel

Be extremely cautious with polarity and ensure all the connection go back on the poles where they started.

Everything is screwed. The 40A fuse from the starter solenoid burn. And the new battery touch the frame. So now nothing works. I decided to have lunch at the restaurant to relax and after I’m going to call my mechanic to take the bike. Last months add be problems after problems. The turbo from Maserati broke, my son was ill, I’m ill. My wife is ill. Even a simple change of battery goes wrong. I’m starting to think what more will happen to me. And I’m proud to say I already forgot the numbers of battery’s I changed.

Best Regards,
Luis Miguel

I am sorry to hear of your woes. We have all been through something similar, or will do so in time. Things improve.

As for batteries, this isn't just any battery system...it is an MV system. Things go wrong when you start to believe you are not error prone.

There are many "I fucked up my battery install" threads.
