B4 Clutch Install

Bike:2011 Brutale 1090RR

I've searched the forum for about a hour and have not been able to find the answer I'm looking for. I have found an answer for the 312 but not the B4. I apologize if I missed it and this is a repost. My question is in regards to the plate and spring sequence when reinstalling the clutch pack. I'm 90% sure I know how I should install the springs but I would like to get a second opinion. The engine manual seems to contradict itself which is making me second guess my decision. That and a possible mistake I made when placing the clutch parts on my work bench.

The engine manual shows that one of the first steps is to install the two springs BEFORE any of the clutch disks. The picture next to this instruction also shows the springs installed on the disk holder before any of the disks are installed (see attachment #1). To add to the confusion, one of my springs was on the disk holder but I found the other spring in the correct spot per the diagram (3rd spot from the bottom of the clutch pack). So I either misplaced one of the springs when putting it on my work bench or the factory installed one in the F4 position and one in the B4 position.

If I go further down in the manual, it shows in the figure and instructions that both springs should be installed AFTER the first two clutch disks and after the nut has been torqued (see attachment #2). This contradicts what was shown earlier in the manual. However, I'm assuming this is the correct sequence. The diagram also matches with the Star Twin diagram for what that's worth. My clutch disk sequence on the work bench also matched the diagram for all of the other disks with the exception of the one spring being out of place.

My plan is to installed spring 5 and spring 6 after I torque the nut and install the first two clutch disks as shown in the latter instructions unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Thoughts? My guess is MV has a typo and left the F4 spring install instruction and picture in the B4 manual.

Those are the "anti-judder" springs. Common an pretty much all bikes. You are over thinking this. I'm pretty sure the B4 and F4 312 have the same clutch design. Put them in the position shown in the parts diagram.... just make sure all parts end up in the right place and the conical spring is pointed the right way.

The photo shows the judder spring and seat (the 2 springs) sitting inside the larger ID friction plate (item #4).

I used to be fast....now I just dream about it.

I'll install it per the diagram. I looked at a few other B4 and F4 diagrams and it seems they previously had the springs installed first. So the pictures and instructions in the manual were accidentally carried over.

The B4 has an ANTI-SLIP clutch the F4 312R DOES NOT!

I assume the difference in spring locations should be because of that. Justin, how sure are you that you stacked the plates correctly on the bench?

I wish I could say I'm 100% sure I stacked them correctly on the bench but there is always room for human error. I may have been drinking bourbon when I took the clutch apart or something....

I'll put it back together per the diagram. Thanks for the input Ed and Chuck.

FYI, I think you have the titles for the above part diagrams flipped around.

That diagram is for the 990R. I wish they would keep the manuals separate to avoid confusion. As you mentioned, for the slipper clutch (on my bike) they move the two springs from the end of the clutch pack to in between disks 4 and 7. So, technically you still have the right diagram pulled up per the header.

Hopefully I didn't cause more confusion with this thread.
