Gear selector spring F4 1078 2009

On way back from Isle of Man after four days on the TT course (thankfully on way back at least!) the bike wouldn't downshift. Up shift was OK, but lever was pretty floppy after a downshift. Could change down by moving lever back up with my foot - doing the job of the spring manually in effect - but the ability to change quickly had gone.

Looking at the forum, it looks like the spring, I have read some posts about changing it on a Brutale. Some posts also recommended trying a Yamaha part 90508-291A8 which I now have on order, although the newer flat springs from MV were also recommended. One post referred to a 312RR so I guess the 1078 version will be the same?

Has anything moved on since those posts? For a 2009 1078 312RR it would be good to know if the pretty long winded procedure (water pump, coolant removal, oil drop,....) is the only way, or whether anyone can simplify the process of getting access.

Any comments about the spring type would be welcome too.

The procedure is detailed in a thread. Nope, no shortcuts. All the 4 cylinder engines are the same. Part was improved by MV.

Just to put your mind at ease, other brand bikes (Japanese) have had similar problems on some models in the past. So it's not just an MV thing.

MV didn't improve the spring they just changed to one using square wire.......
NOBODY uses square wire for valve springs do they?

There's a reason...... square wire has built-in stress risers.....

Thanks Guys, just checking. I've ordered a Yamaha spring like the posts say, then it's access time! With the hammer it took in the Isle of Man, I'm just surprised it made it back to the mainland UK.

Interesting one, the Yamaha spring part I have looks the same as the MV ones in the photos, however it looks like it's the 'opposite hand' shape in terms of which side the kinked end is if that that makes sense. I don't think it'll make a difference once in place, but have others used the Yamaha spring and seen this?

Yes, it's wound the other way. Makes no difference, it's a torsion spring acting off the 'kinked' ends. Works ok though. Have 15000k on mine so far.
